There is an empty slot square on the left side in the detective equipment page, that is marked as ???. What is that equipment slot for?

It's for a pet.

Are pets for any player, or just for subscribers?

The pets are for any player…but I got one as an unsubscribed detective and it has been a challenge to train it with only four mysteries a day.
I would focus on other sleuth goals for now, if I were you.
