Detective Biography

So, you want to know about me? What makes you sure that you can handle what I am going to tell you? And of course, what makes you sure that what I will tell you is the truth? Well, I guess you will just have to listen, and judge for yourself. After all, you are a sleuth, and unraveling mysteries is your job.

I grew up in Hell's Kitchen, one of the many local scamps who run around, trying not to get noticed by the big bullies. Many of my friends ended up working as muscle or as runners for the local gangs, and quite a few of them were pretty good at it and now make a good living in the shadows. Quite a few more of them were not, and they ended up behind bars or six feet under.

Did I dabble in crime? Did I run drugs, act as a spotter, or as thug? Do you really want to know? Let's just say that I did what I had to. But I wanted to make my way out of the Kitchen. I was never good at taking orders, I always preferred giving them. I was smart, I was charming, so after a while I did something that seemed quite logical to me, even at age 11. I talked a number of the other kids into letting me pick the jobs for them, in exchange for a small cut of their take. If a local gang needed a few innocent looking kids as lookouts during a heist, I could provide them. If they needed a pretty little girl to act as a "scared hostage" during a robbery, I had the contacts. Somebody small and nimble for window work? No problem at all. Again, many of the people who worked for me at the time used this as a stepping board into a permanent position with the gangs.

When I grew older, I practiced my charms in other ways, so after a while there were a number of brothers and fathers who were very, very upset with me. Some of them I could appease by offering them a way to earn more money than they could have with honest work. Others decided to back off when they realized just who my customers were. I felt like I was on top of the world, and I was barely 18. I had made a name for myself. What name? No, not telling you. Keep your ears peeled, and you might still hear people whisper it, but it will not be people you want to spend too much time with.


Why did I stop and start this work? Well, after a while it felt stale. There was no challenge to it anymore. It had become routine. And I saw too many of the good people in the Kitchen trying to make a living the honest way being crushed by the big banks and the big businessmen. Sure, the gangs were ruthless, and what I was doing was certainly not doing anything to improve the crime rate, but the gangs still looked out for the small people. There was some honor among thieves, but the banks and the landlords ruined more people in a week than I could have in a lifetime.

So I decided to help in small ways, and then in bigger ways. And after a while I realized that I not only was good at it, I really enjoyed it. And if I fall back into old habits every now and then, so what?
