I'm assuming only subscribed players can engage in those, but I'm really curious about how they go. Could anybody tell me the basics?
And yes, I'm seriously considering the idea of subscribing as soon as I get a job. lol
Please help a curious Sleuth.

Basically, an AV hunt involves chasing one person through all four main cities (as Mak's mentioned above) until you eventually catch said person. You get clues as to where this person is hiding out in each of the cities by solving AI cases. No, you don't get to solve any other kind of cases. And no, once you start the hunt, the system won't let you stop the hunt until you've either failed your hunt (guessed incorrectly about your suspect's whereabouts in a particular city), or caught the guy/lady in your last city. You can't do agency cases. You can't do favors. You CANNOT get help on a case from other people, no matter how pleasantly (or desperately) you ask. You're stuck doing this hunt, for better or worse. The good news is, along the way, you get a boatload of exp. points, skill points, (and if you work it right, money) for your troubles. The bad news is, AV hunts are VERY high-stress, high-risk, high-cost (as in $$$), and high-reward ventures, and for some, they're more trouble than they're worth. Most veterans will strongly recommend you have all of your regular contacts, as well as at least several hundred thousand exp. under your belt before you try these things out.

Bottom line, they're not for the faint of heart. They can, however, be a lot of fun. So keep building up the experience, and we'll see you at the finish line!! ;-D
