I am smart and charming and I already have: thread, rule bending, lock picking, research and sweet talking. What would you suggest I get next?

the advanced charm skills you should go after next, then the smart skills

I would say the opposite, gunn. although it depends on how the person solves the case. if they solve it by going to the townspeople first and eliminating the suspects based on the evidence they have, then they would want to get the smarts skills. however, if they talk to the suspects more, then i would say to go for the charm skills first.
one suggestion to you, jldcat, would be to get hair skill, since you'll never find one without it.

yes, but that would be pointless if you cant get them to answer more then two questions

I vote with Gunn here - and upgrade your sweet talking and rule bending early - especially if you are in an agency where colleagues can help with the 'smart' stuff.
Another consideration is to get the most expensive skills earlier, when your points are coming 'easier'.

Ok, Ok, fine. But I still say she should get the hair skill. Since finding a key piece of evidence at the scene of a crime could be very helpful.

but she can still solve the case without it, besides, it's not very helpful if you cant get the townie to tell you who they think the piece of evidence belongs to because you dont have the proper charm/tough skills to make them talk

I'm with Elsey here, if you don't have basic hair and thread analysis then you'll never find those types of evidence and you'll often find yourself in the same situation as you posted about earlier where there wasn't a piece of physical evidence pointing to the guilty suspect ;)

Of course it is possible to work around it, but it's easier if you have the basic smarts, the advanced smarts are good to have on the higher levels especially if you're NOT in an agency, but if you're in one those are among the skills you can wait with till later :)

Don't need physical evidence if you can ask suspects enough questions. Physical evidence still requires getting the info out of someone if you want to use it. Everyone has a slightly different method, but it seems only logical that you want to max out how many questions you can ask, then max out your evidence analysis skills. Seems pointless to find evidence that you do not have the influence to ask about.

The other way round worked fine for me ;D
But I do agree that there are more ways than one to go about solving cases, just a matter of choosing one and sticking with it :D
