Porno, perhaps this will help a bit. If you have the Judge of Character skill, you can find the stats of sucess for your interview skills before you use them.
(NOTE: Judfe of Character is not a suggested skill for young detectives. It is most usefull when you have a combination of charming/tough skills, but it is still recommended that you get a full set of EITHER tough OR charm to begin.)
Base Interrogation Chance: 26
Tough Equipment Adjustment: 6
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Pugilism Bonus: 10
Adjusted Interrogation Chance: 77
Base Sweet Talking Chance: 55
Charming Equipment Adjustment: 17
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Flirting Bonus: 20
Adjusted Sweet Talking Chance: 127
Each suspect has a base reaction to either of the interview skills, your equipment and level of skills increase your sucess rate. As noted above, flirting only works on townies and suspects of the opposite sex. Pugilism, however works on either.
Hope that helps a bit. Either way, Flirting and Pugilism will both help you more than any single piece of equipment you might find.
