Im not extremely experienced myself but I just done a really hard case in which I had NO EVIDENCE of the killer, no leads whatsoever, but while doing the case I got a letter saying to watch my step, and a woman had given it to the post man so thats the way I figured out my case, only had 2 suspects left, the other female had been killed, but the one that had gotten killed, nobody had a reason to suspect her, so during cases be sure to read the little pages you may get while doing it.
the clues from the crime scene I dont find to be very helpful most of the time, the more you can get someone to talk seems to be the most help to me because I can ask alot more questions and find out alot more about the suspects.
pick locking is good to know... it saves you a question and sometimes that one question is enough for a conviction.
From one noob to another, i hope that helps you set up your character and give you a little better insite on how to determine who the killer is.
Oh, I didnt say skills like advanced thread or hair analysis or shoeprint analysis wasnt anygood, it does help when you can find that particular item and determine if its from a male or female, heavy or slim, or staight or curly haired person but I have advanced thread and hair analysis and most of the time I find the hair but it doesnt say if its from curly or straight, same as the thread dont always tell me male or female.

Not everyone solves cases the same way, but I have found as I go along that it is easiest for me to solve cases if I depend heavily on the physical evidence. While I agree that new players might not want to do this, as they might not have all the evidence skills or the smarts gear to support them, I believe it is misleading to downplay the usefulness of these skills.
And I love picking locks, but it is not as important a skill as Research, for sure, and I would say it's not as important as your interviewing skills or evidence skills either.
And I agree with reda about the cutscenes, too. Even the ones you think always turn out the same way don't. The cutscenes that actually have an impact as far as we can tell have to do with the factions and with Larry the Toe, not with the guilt or innocence of a particular suspect.
