What is the newspaper for? The one that is displayed as soon as you log in? Are those real cases you can try to solve? Are they only for subscribers? How do I check my private messages?

The newspaper does list actual cases.

They are for the agencies to race against each other.

And yes you have to be subscribed to join an agency.

The newspaper is the City News -- telling people about lost treasures and alerting agencies to a new hunt. It displays current news and eviction notices, also. No, they are not real cases you can solve. Your private messages just pop up when you receive them -- no checking required.

I searched through the community websites, but I can't seem to find the answer to this simple quesiton- What exactly are Adjustments?

Adjustments are made to your detective's type: Tough, Smart, and Charming. Buy or get items for your detective, and you'll get adjustments. Some skills even give you adjustments. Adjustments help you in cases - Tough for tough skills to work better, Smart for the analysis skills to work better, and Charming for the charming skills to work better. Gosh, this is the best I can do. Anyone else care for a try?

The newspaper, City News, is basically just a quick check for hunt changes or sometimes notices from Ben, but this information can be found in other areas around Slueth as well.

Adjustments are as Shanty says, equipment and skill up grades (or penelties as the case may be) that affect your ability to use your interview and crime scenes skills.

You want to search for items that support your interview skills, so if you use tough skills, you don't need charming equipment, etc. Smart skills can also be supported with equipment to make them more effective.

You'll need to enable pop-ups to receive private messages from other sleuth players.

How exactly do experience points work? Do they automatically grant you more skill points as your experience builds up?

I'm not sure anyone knows /exactly/ how they work, but yes, the more experience points you get, the more skill points you get, although the more experience points you have, the slower the skill points come. There are other discussions about this on the boards, but besides the relationship with skill points, the other thing experience points do is rank you in the game on the lists at City Hall.

One addendum to adjustments - you can see the effect that the adjustments will have for tough or charming if you get judge of character - because it lets you see what base you are starting from for each suspect. Although its kind of neat - it is not one of the most useful skills when you are starting (compared to interview or smart skills) - so I'd counsel to postpone getting it til you get to the hardest level cases. (just mho)

Another thing about adjustments is they get effected by an agency status bonus - I remember a thread on the topic, now ito find the thread...
