Research - automatically makes EVERY case seem like its a full level easier - (eg incredibly hard would normally have 5 suspects with fake alibis - this knocks it down to four - what a difference!)
Footprint analysis is good, and you should get it as you fill out your smart skills, but research will help with every case at every level.
