How can you raise your standings with the Costra Nostra and Order o Socrates. It seems you can only do favors for the Arcanum Brotherhood.

I think it's 25 faction points, plus the skill points needed by your archetype to purchase that skill. Most of us oldtimers recommend waiting until you have just about all the other skills before investing in faction skills, however...choose wisely!

OK, so once you get a contact is that person your contact for good, or is it possible to lose them?

How many cases are you allowed to quit? And what do you do if no one seems to know anything?

you can quit as many cases as you want and it wont effect you at all, its the falses you dont want to get. 3 false accusations and you are retired.
If noone seems to know anything, as in they are all clammed? Quit the case

Is it wise to go ahead and pay the shady character to clear the false accusations I've made, or will he take the money and run with it. He is "shady" so I don't really trust him.

It's WISE!!! Three falses, and you will be starting ALL OVER AGAIN with a new character! Shady may be "shady," but apparently there is honor among thieves. Shady always delivers what he promises.
I wait until I have two falses to pay - you get more for your money that way. But I know those who always pay the first time, as they are afraid they won't pay attention to distinguishing between their first and second.
I am confident about this because I don't get falses very often. It's too expensive, so I have learned to quit cases rather than guess. So therefore it is always a wake-up call when I do get one...
