If a townie states that so and so knows who the murderer is, does that have any bearing on whether the one who knows could have done it or not?

Thanks. I just answered my own question by arresting the one who cause this question to be generated.

That has not been my experience with my accounts. I have had them say Mrs. X knows nothing. I went straight to Mrs. X and ask her. She gave WE. Of course, remember that 2 WE are true and 1 is false. I did not pay attention as to whether or not her WE was true, but I think it was.

My understanding is that you will get 4 names. Two will be said to think they know who the murderer is (and may in fact BE your murder - this has happened to me several times), and two will be said to know nothing.

I am not inclined to rely heavily on the townies statements myself. I'd have to do a thorough statistical study, because I've had too many oddities.
