Hi, kinda new still and having a great time, but quick question:
When I got to the detective store, they always have the same items, yet I click on the names of people and they have all sorts of different items that aren't in the detective store. And the townies keep giving me the same items as favors, so my question is, do you have to subscribe to get the really good items? Or does the detective store change its stock as you get items and move up in exp?

The detective store stock does not change as far as I have noticed. You can get better items from doing favors. The harder the favor the better quality the gift will be. The best stuff is sold by the factions. You must be in good standing with them, and their prices are cheapest when you are +30 in standings. But be warned, all the higher gear comes at extreme prices. For example, the Dragon and Phoenix fan which I carry is $70,000 at its cheapest price.
You can purchase most items with out being subscribed, but you can not travel to the other cities to purchase items from the other factions without subscribing. You will only be able to purchase the things available in New York.

The detective store never changes.
You get different items (better too!) when you have higher difficutly of favors. You can get more difficult favors by doing cases and favors and gettting exp.
The factions are also out there. LCN, OS, and DAB are open to the non-subbed, but subscribed members also get 3 more factions in the other cities.
Big Lucy offers some items as well.
Finally, some items are hard to get because there are only a few out there. Good examples are the Magic Top Hat and the Santa Hat. The Santa Hat was given away at Christmas of 2004 (no more will be made - I think there are only 2 left. Myself and Stanz have them.) and the Magic Top Hat is given out at the Admin's discretion.

Oh - It came to my attention that some santa hats are hidden out of sight in agency lockers. So there may be more than you can see.
