So, you evil people have me hooked. i sent off my money order today and Ben has very kindly activated me.
So my question would be:

What would you say the best way to choose an agency would be?
Ok.. that was poorly written.
How does one choose an agency to join?
Nope.. not enough. Hmmm.
Based on your intelligence and experience [ (c) Nero Wolfe] What should a new detective be looking for in an agency?

I think that does it. I've looked over the "Recruiting" Section and... well... I guess I haven't figured the later game out that well. Oh, the "What Agencies do" sections on some of the sites are really good, but my memory ain't what it used to be. Add to that, I've always been more of a "Figure it out as you go" kinda guy. Telling me what's coming never sticks in my seive-like memory.

So, any suggestions?

I do not think there is a best way to choose. I think the smart detective will use some of those detective skills and research each agency they are thinking about. Decide how much and how often you will be able to play. Some agencies want players to play daily and be online or available much of the day so they can hunt for treasures. Some agencies share passwords so that when you are not online someone else can log in as you and do the favor. There are agencies that are less active in hunts and let the agent move through Sleuth world at their own pace.
My best advice is for you to decide what you want from the game. There are enough agencies out there, that one of them will be the perfect fit. Do not be afraid to ask questions of the directors. Everyone is very nice and friendly. I think most would agree that even if you do not join their agency, they would like to see you happy wherever you do find a home. It is better for Sleuth for you to play and be happy.

Also keep in mind that some agencies are looking for particular contacts in specific cities, due to a lack in thier own ranks. It's usually preferable to have every contact covered in every city, in case the agency moves and a contact is needed to finish a case.
As Arabella said, don't be afraid to PM a director and ask questions, post on the Recruiting message board, and keep an eye out for what you want and where you want to be.

Thanks! That's relly good advice. I'll just keep trolling through the Recruiting board and see if I can't find something that fits.

Ask about equipment sharing and locker space.

You might want to travel a bit now that you are subscribed (although watch the $$) and try 'living' in the different cities for a bit. Each has its own charm, so it might be a factor in choosing an agency if (for example) you really like the racetrack in Shanghai.
