My dectective is a 'Very Smart' type so I'm wondering what would be more useful. I don't know if this will help but I have a beret.

You won't go far wrong, either way. Both will be useful early and also in the long run. If I were starting over, I'd get my basic sweet talking and rule bending, then research and then advanced ST & RB. But the research can wait til you have full level charm.

When you round out your charm skills, be sure to get flirting, it really helps enhance the sweetalking and rulebending with the opposite sex.

btw, if you are going for charm, get flirting - turns out it REALLY helps w/ the opposite sex.

I think that research is an extremely useful skill, even more than Sweet Talking and similars...

why?
well, because when research works (and, by the way, i'm Smart & charming, and it has not worked just a couple of time in 50 cases solved!), you IMMEDIATLY know that ONE suspect without alibi or real alibi is innocent.
and this tightens the actual suspects...

a must have, absolutely.

Research is one skill that does not rely on your gear to make it work. If you go to research and you find nothing, it is simply because the person cleared by research is not on your suspect list yet. :)
