When you are startingout, its not unusual to have folks clam up before you can get your full list of suspects. You don't yet have the skills or experience (or helpful gear) that will help them to open up to you.
You also need basic thread and hair skills to find all the evidence. If you don't have those, you may miss things - so get them as soon as you can.
Your best bet is to start out with the very easiest beginner cases, and don't try anything harder than easy until you get some gear (which you will earn by doing favors...but those are intermediate even from the start, so they will seem very hard at first. You may have to quit a few cases in the beginning, but that stage will pass pretty fast if you just hang in there. Good luck.

You might wanna get some charm/tough skills, based on your character profile. It helps when you interview a suspect or a townsperson. I suggest you pick either a charm/tough persuasion skill and stick to it entirely.
Be sure to ask around for other suspects and motives, but don't overdo it. Intermediate cases and below have about 6 people to interview, you just gotta ask around for 'em.
