Your detective is permanently "retired". You can start a new one, but you will have lost all your experience, gear and money. If you are subscribed, you can roll the subscription over to the new one;

So make sure you keep your Solved/Bungled case ratio to at least 6/7:1
At least at earlier stages, it costs less to clean your record.
