One common problem is if your browser or net security is set to block popups. Mine is so security conscious that every time I upgrade my virus protections I have to reauthorize this site. You can usually find it in preferences, or do a help search.
No idea why you would be having trouble reading the menus. Does it happen if you use other machines?
