Hello everyone. I am preparing to move into my first apartment (still in college). I was wondering if anyone has helpful hints on moving smoothly. I will be moving my things over 100 miles, so any hints in regards to packing, moving, and unpacking would really help. Thanks!!!

Good one Morley. Moving provides an opportunity to organize and clean up.

Sweets, make sure the appartment looks clean, nice, rugs shampood, no dammage and stains. Etc. If it is not, and you think it will cost you money to fix it up yourself. Discuss with your landlord if he is willing to do it, or willing to cover cost.

I am not sure how it works in American law. There are a few people here that have studied American law. That would be best to advise. (They may also want to browse through your renting contract.)

From my dutch law perspective.
But when you live in your new digs. And you want to do something to it, that in the end what up the value for the landlord. In Dutch law, you can both discuss to for him to cover it all, or cover half of the cost. For reconstruction, you need to have his permission anyway.

Also if you plan to paint or wall paper or something like that, for reason that you do not like the current color scheme, or the appartment is delivered to you bare. Discuss this with your landlord. In Holland, he would not need to pay for that, as it is your choice. But if you get the approval of him for the color scheme, you do not have to take it all off and return it to the original state before you move out.

Also make sure you check things that are not visible before moving in. Like the state of the heater, the aircon, the water system, leaky roof. A landlord is obligated to pay for repairs and stuff. But sometimes situation gets hazy, like you only have hot water for 5 minutes only.
Save you some aggravation.

I'd be happy to read your contract. But as I am not an American lawyer, I would read it from a dutch law perspective. So if you can not find someone in your country to read it for you. I'd be happy to still help out. Just PM me, and I will send you my email address.

Have a separate bag to pack some stuff for your first night there.
Arrange things by the way you will use them.
Rolling up clotes can help.

Thanks, I hadn't even thought of most of this, especially the idea of packing a separate bag for the first night. Thanks!!!
