How do I pause agame to go and buy some more experience skills?

I think it's possible to buy skills even during a case. Just go to your detective page and click on the number of skill points you have avaiable. However, once you've started a case it won't make a difference to what you've found at the crime scene if you buy more of the smarts skills (not counting research, because that one will work), because it's what you find the first time you go there that matters and it doesn't change :)

Oh, and just to clarify, research does not work at the crime scene - in case it reads that way from what I wrote ;)

Right. For Research, go to the City Hall and then to the Hall of Records.
