You won't turn up any results from research unless the person who will be absolved by the research is already on your suspect list.
If you use research when your suspect list is complete but before you ask for alibis, you can save yourself a question by not asking the cleared suspect for an alibi in the first place.
The cleared person will also never be matched with any physical evidence.
Also, if you know you need one more person to complete your suspect list, yet no results come up from research, you can save asking the motive question as you know the missing suspect is innocent.
