Your standing with La Cosa Nostra will improve, if you solve this case.

The Order of Socrates would like to see this matter go away.

when you get these messages should you quit if you dont want your stading to drop with a particular group or should you try and solve as many cases as possible regardless of standings

according this...Is there a limit of quitting cases or there isn't any limited number?

You can quit as many cases as you want, it won't harm you in any way (whereas 3 falses will get your detective retired) - but you get the option to do a favour for one of the townspeople after every 4 successfully solved cases (this includes the previous favour if you managed to solve it).
This means that with the limit of 3 daily cases to non-subscribers, a quit (or false) case will "deprive" you of the chance for a favour and you'll have to wait till the next day to get a chance do one as you won't have enough cases :)
