I've been poking around assorted things trying to work out what everything does, and the one thing I can't find any information on is the agency crime labs.

What's their function?

they only exist in agencies, a crime lab helps determine the specifity of a certain piece of evidence, such as if it's curly or straight for a hair. to use it you must be in or start an agency with a crime lab included. to use the crime lab, you must have the skill of the evidence you want to specify and even then it's not 100%. but since so many people have so many contacts it seems that a crime lab is becoming more and more obsolete

So...what does it do that the advanced physical evidence skills don't do already, then?

It does the same thing, but it's a way for a fellow detective to analyze evidence that you didn't do yourself. Advanced physical evidence skills don't always work. They rely on your smarts rating.

Right. And your advanced skills work better when enhanced by wearing smarts gear, whether searching a crime scene or using the crime lab.

The crime lab is a way to make a second pass on evidence you couldn't find everything out about on the first pass, basically.
