I keep getting items that boost anything but smarts and I'm starting to think it wasn't a good idea to have a very smart character since it's hard to question people. I have only invested into some smart skills (research and advance thread skills). Should I get a charm or thought skills?

Choose either Charm or Tough skills to improve your interrogation skills. Given the items you're using now, charm seems to be the way that you're leaning. Use the skill points you're acquiring via Smarts-based deduction, and invest in the interrogation skills for a charming character. I can't comment on the difference between toughness and charming, but either way it should help you in talking to suspects.

Just to clarify John's excellent advice, if you are leaning towards charming skills and gear, Sweet Talking and Rule Bending are the skills you'd want to build up in order to deal with clamming. Thus, it would help you with "interrogation." However, Interrogation in terms of the game skill vocabulary is a tough skill, the tough equivalent of Sweet Talking.
