i had the skill and it still says i have it but it no longer works. how come?

Jake, you my friend, are the victim of some really foul luck when it comes to getting favor items. The tough stuff is there you just have to be lucky enough to get them.

As for the store owners getting murdered... If you're going for the PE ones I'm willing to help. Especially if its the Banker. Let me take a quote from my profile:

"I solved my 500th case which was a favor for the Banker. All I got was a stinking Rasputin Egg."
