Can smart skills fail? Or is it a game bug?

I had this match with 4 clues, 2 male threads and two slim footprints.

I had a male suspect with a heavy footprint, against which I had collected a witness evidence. Yet, none of the two physical evidences (the two threads) did match the victim.

So I tried to collect evidence against the other victims, but I had exhausted my talking options at that point, so I quit the case. Turns out... the guy I had a witness evidence against, but no PE, was indeed the guilty one (yet I couldn't hold anything against him).

Does the footprint/thread/handwriting identification skills "fail" sometimes, ie do they sometimes wrongly identify a clue as belonging to a certain group of people? Or is it a game bug?

I'm a bit dissapointed

You probably mean suspects where you wrote victims? Honestly, I never had it happen that no piece of PE could be linked to the killer. If it did happen then it must have been a glitch.
