That's the response you get when your pet has already been fed for the day, so I think it might have been a case of the double-clicks. I don't know if the game itself has gotten more double-click-prone over the last couple of days but I've been seeing lots of reactions that are usually responses to double-clicks and getting kicked to the log-in page (while still logged in) every now and then. I don't know, weird.
Oh, and to check if your pet really did get his dinner, you can keep tabs on how happy they seem in the description box. If all has been going well, you've been doing cases and your pet isn't falling sick or anything, then your pet's life with you should be "an extremely happy one" on food-only days, and "the happiest it could possibly be" on food+grooming days, after he's been taken care of.

Actually I was wrong about the happiness measure on food-only days; the best way to ensure your pet's been fed on ANY day is to check if you're still given the option to feed him/her at the Waiter's/Waitress' - if you aren't, it's all good and if you are, take it. :D
