It seems to happen when the research does not have a suspect to rule out. At least when I realized what was happening and that it wasn't a one off thing and started watching for it, it was only research (no suspect found in research) and then back to map and bam! not logged in anymore.
10,000xp?! Geez... who you gotta kill to get that twist?

To be more precise, you ALWAYS get booted during a favor case after you checked the crime scene.

Well... that stinks. I have given up on getting a basket after wandering around for WAY too long looking for one.

You get booted out also while interviewing suspects and townies...its happened to me a lot.
Also I've done about 5 cases now with no favor :(
