I've noticed some folks have a thingee in their profile that says "Background," and it will read "Disillusioned Cop" or "Freelance Investigative Reporter" or something like that. As far as I can recall, this wasn't an option when I created my character. Is this a little extra that becomes available later on or something like that?

I think that if you choose the easy option when creating your character, where your beginning skills are chosen for you, that is where it comes from. Could be wrong.

yeah, that's where you can choose your background.
each background is connected to an archetype, and that one you can choose in the other option, without having a background attached to it.

Correct, when you create your detective you have two options. One is easy and another is advanced. If you choose the easy one, the detective will have a background, but if you choose the advanced option, there won't be a background.

Personally, I prefer having no preset background. That way, I can always change my character's biography and background according to my imagination.
