With the holidays quickly approaching and the weather getting colder, I’d like to invite you all to participate in something that doesn’t require you to get out of bed or wear pants. :) It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these, so I’m happy to announce the Sleuthville 2016 Holiday Writing Competition! Everyone, either subbed or unsubbed, is welcome to participate.

The format will be a narrative poem. Narrative poems usually tell stories, have a strong sense of characters and narration, and have plots that go from beginning--> middle--> end. They do not have to rhyme, but you are certainly welcome to make your poem rhyme if you want to.

Poems MUST:
1) Have a December holiday theme (you can write about a specific holiday, the holiday season in general, etc.)
2) Take place in the Noir world and time period.

Rules:
1) Poems have a strict 1-post limit (~2000 characters). Less is fine, but any bits that go over will not be counted as part of the entry.
2) You may submit as many poems as you like.
3) All poems must have a title.
4) Entries will be looked at by a panel of 4 judges, myself included. They will be evaluated on creativity, flow, accordance with the theme, and spelling/grammar.
5) All entries must be submitted between now and 23:59 SST on January 3, 2017. Judging will begin on January 4th and hopefully conclude within that week.

Prizes:
The 1st place winner will receive $100,000 and custom item prize! Ooh, aah.
The second place winner will receive $50,000.
The third place winner will receive $25,000.

Furthermore, all participants will have their entries featured in a new in-game book, so they can be forever immortalized! The book will then be hidden somewhere in Sleuthville so you can all search for it.

If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a message. Most importantly of all, make sure to have fun! :D

*actually went back up to see if pants were mentioned*

Hey, it's been a while since I read it originally. And yes they're mentioned.

Dammit. That was Autumn. And so is this. I have a tendency to forget whose pants I'm in atm. :/

Upon re-reading that, I realize it probably could have been worded better.

In British English, pants mean underwear.

I am posting my first entry. It is a mixture of traditional and free verse. I will post the title here, because otherwise it would run over. It's titled:

The Horrifying Case of the Christmastime Murder

Once upon a time, in the world of Sleuth
Came together burgeoning private eye youths,
Ageing detectives, whose weapons are canes
Fathers and mothers, in this lovely domain.

And, lo, filled the season both murder and dread
Some choked on their porridge, some were strangled in bed.
What is a Sleuth to do, in this season of joy
But to roll up their sleeves, and their tactics employ.

Oh, it saddened me not
To see cases so arrayed
Until a crime was committed
That on heart heavily weighed.

For Rudolph was slain!
Oh, that innocent beast!
Was chopped up into pieces
A fortnight, before Christmas eve feast!

And Sleuths from all over were set on his trail
For they were eager to wear him,
Both antlers and tail

His murder left them cold, no, they thought only of cases
As I stared in full horror at their blood-stricken faces.

For, lo! How sorrowful it be
The slaying of an innocent creature as he
I spent many sleepless nights thinking:
“BUT WHO, WHO COULD IT BE?”

My first suspicions fell upon Sleuth Admin
My biggest problem: questioning him, for he wasn't in!
He had packed up his bags, and was nowhere to be found
I know, because I asked everyone in town!

The butcher, the bartender, and Father Manfred, the priest!
I traversed New York on foot, all the way from west to east!

“Could a Squirrel kill a reindeer? Or could it be a Yeti bear?”
I swept through the crime scene, searching for animal hair.
Yet I found nothing, sadly.

Next on my list was Adela Bradley
The first to find the items, and who had done so gladly!

Alas, my investigations amounted to naught
Whoever had slain him was too careful to get caught.

I drowned my grief in a chocolate box
A cheap gossip tabloid, and a scotch on the rocks.

“'TIS CHRISTMAS DAY!”, the grandfather clock was tick-tocking
I glanced at the chimney, and found a note in my stocking!

“Fear not, my sweet child, for Rudolph died of old age,
He was a great beast, both cheerful and sage
So, please, rejoice and have a merry Christmas!
Signed: Yours truly, Saint Nich
