So it looks like some of those who received PMs regarding the proposed fix haven't forwarded it to their teammates.
In the interest on everyone having the same information I'm sharing it here. Riza wants to know if we go through with this plan or handle it a different way. First, her message:

"So here's the plan. I'm going to survey all the teams. If at least 3 of them say they are willing to revise and resubmit their pieces, then we'll scrap the original entries and use the new ones. Except this time, there will be explicitly stated word limits and content guidelines. And I will be running it."

Here are my thoughts:

The proposed "fix" of a rewrite is no fix at all.
the contestants all put a LOT of work into their submissions. we shouldn't have to do that work over again, while trying to do this week's events as well.

Here's my suggestion:

Maybe those who were within the stated limit should be given the chance to submit their ORIGINAL entries (as long as it's under 5000 characters and those who went over shouldn't.

That way, the event would count so the work put into them wouldn't be disregarded.

Those who wrote according to the stated rules wouldn't have to do a complete rewrite. And those who went over wouldn't be penalized.

If three teams agree to Riza's suggestion, it will be implemented. If at least three teams do not vote yes, I hope they will implement my suggestion. It seems the most fair way to deal with this.

I am getting to get at play two teams to vote no.

They were announced before the submission though if I'm not mistaken. So you had your chance to confirm (again if I'm not mistaken).

Given everything that has happened recently the following cocktail seems appropriate :)

Painkiller

2 oz Dark rum
1 oz Coconut rum
3 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Orange juice
Dash Nutmeg

Combine rum, coconut rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice in a shaker half-filled with ice.
Shake and pour into a highball or double-old-fashioned glass.
Sprinkle a dash of nutmeg on top.

These ex parte conversations are a big part of the overall problems that have been experienced throughout this event. In the legal world and in the vast majority of competitions, ex parte conversations between participants and judges and officials are strictly out-of-bounds. Officials and judges are supposed to maintain impartiality and avoid even the *appearance* of impartiality. All questions and responses to those questions should be posted on the boards. The main thing in any competition is transparency - and that has been lacking in this event.

I post this with all due respect to the officials and judges. Yes, I agree we should appreciate the time and effort they've put into organizing the event, but they should also respect us by being transparent and even-handed.

Were the rules posted where everyone could see/find them?
Were any changes made to the rules?
Were those changes posted where everyone could see/find them?

If the answer to the above questions is yes to all 3, then the rules should stand as they were amended.
If the answer to #3 is no, then the rules should stand as originally written.
Rules have a reason and should not be bent or changed mid-contest. It leads to confusion.

And before I get a bunch of s**t, I'm not criticizing any participant who PMd an official/judge. The official/judge should have responded to their PM explaining that they needed to post their question on the board. In fact, that should have been one of the first "rules" posted.
