6. What country has won the most medals at the Olympics, Summer and Winter combined?

The United States has won the most medals, Summer and Winter combined, with a total of 2681. The combined Soviet/Russian teams are second, with 1868, and the combined German teams are third with 1681.

7. What person has won the most medals (any type) at a SINGLE Olympics?

American Michael Phelps (Swimming) and Soviet Alexander Dityatin (Gymnastics) have both won 8 Olympic medals in a single Olympics. Phelps won 6 Gold and 2 Bronze in Athens in 2004, and 8 Gold in 2008 in Beijing. Dityatin won 3 Gold, 4 Silver, and 1 Bronze in the 1980 Moscow games.

8. In what sports do men and women compete as equals historically in the Summer Games (i.e. " at the same time in a heat or competition)?

Sailing and equestrian have historically been the two sports that men and women compete in together at the SAME time, in the same heats across all events. Tennis, badminton, archery, and figure skating have all had mixed doubles (one man and one woman in a team) events, but none of these were exclusively non-gender.

E.C. " What year did one of those sports change their format to men's and women's divisions? (1 pt.)

Sailing changed its format to include an exclusively women's event, starting in 1988. Equestrian is the only sport that still allows both men and women to compete together in the same events.

9. What 2 winter sports were included in the Summer Games (before the Winter Olympics were created)?

Figure skating and ice hockey are the only 2 sports that have been included in both the Summer and the Winter games.

E.C. " When were the Winter Games created? (1 pt.)

The first Winter Olympics were created in 1924, and held in Chamonix, France.

10. When was the last time a sprinter in his thirties ran for the U.S. at the Olympics prior to 2016?

An American athlete in his 30's ran the 100 meter dash in 1912 (Stockholm, Sweden).

Baseball and softball were officially discontinued, with no return dates planned.

E.C. " What 2 discontinued sports are returning to the 2016 Rio Games? (1 pt.)
