New York, 1938
St. Regis Hotel
Rooftop Nightclub

"So there I was, staring down a barrel INCHES from death...and I told the man, 'darling REALLY, if you simply must shoot me do allow me to remove my earrings. They are Cartier, you know." Molly Maltese paused to take a sip of her Red Snapper, popping the olive neatly between her cherub lips before gnashing it to a pulp. "And the man was quite flummoxed, he said- I say, is that Riza Hawkeye?"

She rose, the group of rapt men in tuxedos and women in glittering dresses and furs murmuring their protests as she wended through their knees. But the apparition she was quite sure had been Riza Hawkeye had vanished in the crowd of New York socialites populating the exclusive terrace.

"Well, this place is a bit ritzy for Riza." she murmured, fairly certain her old acquaintance didn't make a habit of populating social-climbing fetes. And she reasoned, any time Riza had appeared before it was hardly ever for a pleasant cause. Well, maybe that was unfair. It just seemed she was more the swirl-of-furs-and-stiletto-daggers type than a frothy socializer like Molly herself.

Peering around, Molly saw nothing but the shadowed faces of revelers partially cloaked in the smoky haze. She had just been about to give up and go back to her companions when the most shocking hubbub began. Over on the north part of the terrace, she could distinctly hear the shouts of men and panicked screeching of females. Moving forward, she could just make out..

"Did you see... The Ambassador... who could have... murder! Someone has pushed the Ambassador off the building!" Molly picked up speed, expertly weaving through the crowd of panicked voices. Sirens already began to sound twenty stories below. Just as she grasped the ledge and looked over, an all too familiar voice sounded in her left ear.

"Oh hello there, old friend. Lovely breeze out today."

Before her stood Riza Hawkeye herself, looking utterly unruffled as several ladies fainted behind her.

details of your arrangement with Mr. Akbhar. If you do not wish your wife and community to know, you will place a cash sum of $10,000 in a brown bag and place it in the forked tree at the utmost corner of the Gaza Garden Park by 10pm on Saturday night. If you fail, you will be outed and the consquences, severe."

Molly looked over the note, biting back the questions about the 'arrangement'. She had a feeling, and preferred not to know.

"Willie, I think you should go through with the drop. However, I'll arrange for some surveillance, and hopefully we can recover your cash at a later time without any unsightly information coming to the surface." Willie just nodded, and Molly began to gather her things, throwing some bills on the table.

"I have to show this to my compatriots right away. This could help our case greatly. It was lovely to see you!" She kissed her friend on the forehead and sped away, intent on finding her friends at the safehouse.

As she neared the address, the strangest feeling prickled across the back of her neck. Was she being followed? Peering around, she saw nothing. Hurrying, she threw open the door just as she heard a glass shatter and a door slam.

“Well then,” Riza said. “I guess we’ll be keeping that extra little tidbit to ourselves.”

Suddenly Molly felt something whiz past her ear and gunfire broke out behind her. With an unladylike shriek she threw herself out of the doorway, rolling like a madwoman as she tried to think where her gun was.

As Vulkie stalked out of the main hall towards the living room to cool herself down, she went over the events again that happened a few moments ago. She and Marc had gotten into a verbal fight about trusting eachother and the limits as to how information could, or even should, be obtained. Marc did have a point - Vulkie was a softhearted girl, who looked at every aspect there was. She knew she had made a valid point with bringing up Hassan's family, but was shocked when Marc said he didn't care; didn't care about a 5 year old boy, who would never see his father again...

"Well then" she heard Riza say, "I guess we'll be keeping that extra little tidbit to ourselves." she added.

Just then, she heard a shriek and the sound of a gun discharging. Instantly, she fell down, onto the floor, grabbed her Colt 1911 and crawled quickly towards the main hall. As she saw Molly rolling over the floor, she got up and went into a shooting position, covering Molly while she rolled her way into the living room.

As Vulkie glanced towards the dining room, she saw that Marc and Riza were in the main dining room, trying to peek through the windows as to see where the shooter was.

"I do say.." Molly said, adjusting her hair quickly and frantically searching for her gun, "I think someone wants us dead.." she added.

"You think?" Vulkie said, sarcasm drowning her voice, as the shooting continued. Just as she was to peek around the corner again towards the door opening, a bullet lodged itself into the wooden frame and Vulkie quickly drew herself back.

"Son of a bitch - he's got us covered from all angles." Vulkie murmered, while Molly smiled.

"What could you be possibly smiling for? We're in a life or death - situation at the moment." Vulkie said, looking disturbed towards Molly, who had finally retrieved her gun.

"He's got us covered from the front dear... which means that you need to get the UPPER hand on him" Molly said...

As Vulkie thought about that sentence, it instantly struck her. She slapped her hand on her forehead; why didn't she think of that?

"MARC, RIZA" Vulkie shouted, as the gunfire was still going on, "I NEED TO GET UPSTAIRS. COVER ME!"

As Marc and Riza heard that, they used their guns to shoot out the windows and return fire to the gunman, who had seized his fire for a moment. He was probably reloading at this point.

"Now or never.." Vulkie said towards Molly and she sped towards the main hall and took the spiral staircase upstairs. As she was on the first floor, she sped her way towards the window at the end of the hall and looked out of it. She couldn't see anyone, possibly meaning that the gunman was in cover or she wasn't in a high enough position. As she had a split second, she made her way towards the spiral staircase again, ascending it to the second floor.

As she sped her way towards the window there, she heard the gunfire resuming and a shout erupted from within the house. Someone had been hit...

"Goddamnit!" Vulkie said to herself, and she took cover by the window. As she peeked over, she could see the whole street. "There you are, you son of a bitch.." Vulkie murmered, while taking aim and fired her Colt 1911. The bullet lodged itself into the car the gunman had hid himself behind and he was immediately alerted by it, taking aim and shooting at Vulkie.

Vulkie immediately ducked and waited, until the gunfire stopped. She stood up, took aim again and... the gunman had disappeared. "Where did he go?" Vulkie said to herself. She waited another minute or two, but eventually made her way back downstairs towards the main hall. Gun still drawn, she rushed towards the front door and closed it.

"Molly, Riza, Marc - you guys alright?" Vulkie asked, while looking at the group of detectives who had realized the gunfight was over and had regrouped in the main dining room.

As she observed the detectives, she saw that Molly was hit by a bullet in the shoulder..

Marc was addressing the wound already with a medical kit he had found in the kitchen. "It's nothing Molly - the bullet went straight through. You'll be fine" Marc said, reassuring Molly.

"It's nothing? You call being shot nothing? And what about my fancy outfit?" Molly said, as Riza smirked and Vulkie let out a sigh.

"Did you get him at the least?" Molly asked, looking towards Vulkie. Vulkie shook her head in return.

"Once he was alerted to my position, he knew the game was up. He made sure to get away clean and with his life still intact. Although I'm sure that whoever sent him, won't be too happy about it when he hears that he didn't kill his intended targets." Vulkie said.

Riza immediately sprang up and said: "Come with me Vulkie - we need to investigate his shooting position. Maybe he left a clue behind for us."

As the two detectives made their way to the front door, they both drew their gun again. It was unsure whether he was still in the vicinity and hoped for an easy target. As Vulkie poked her head around the corner, she didn't see anyone in the abandoned street. "All clear" she murmered and the detectives went towards the car the shooter had hid behind.

As they looked on the ground, they could see at least two dozen of bullet casings, .22 caliber bullets by the looks of it. And there, lying under the car, was an envelope.

"Jackpot" Riza said, while Vulkie grabbed the envelope from under the car. Riza still had her eyes on both sides of the street, just in case.

"Here it is." Vulkie said. As she turned the envelope over, she noticed that it had a wax seal with some type of flower on it. Identifying flowers wasn't her strongest point, but she was sure that someone might know what kind of flower it was.

As the detectives returned to the safehouse, Vulkie threw the envelope in front of Molly. "Only thing we could find, except bullet casings." Riza said. As Marc and Molly observed the letter, Molly made out a small sound, as she saw the envelope...

"That seal..." Molly began, as she looked into her envelope and produced a somewhat similar envelope.

"Where did you get that Molly?" Marc asked and Molly began to explain her meeting with Willie Dennington, the propiertor of the Pyramid Room located in the middle of Cairo.

"So you see, we have another lead. I've convinced Willie to go ahead with the drop on the next saturday, at 10 pm." Molly concluded.

As the detectives glared at the still sealed envelope, Marc picked it up and tore it open. As he opened the letter, he just simply placed it on the table so that the detectives could all look at it.

It said: "STAY OUT OF OUR BUSINESS, IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIVES DETECTIVES! YOURS TRUlY, JACK"

"So the letter was made just in case the shooter didn't succeed into getting rid of us. That's why it was left behind" Riza said, while Vulkie scribbled it down. This case was getting more frustrating by the minute.

"I bet your buddy Hassan told this Jack that we were staying here. That's how they probably found us" Marc snapped at Vulkie, while Vulkie opened her mound to retort. But she was interrupted by Riza: "Not now guys... we need to focus. Our first objective is to find another hideout, since we aren't safe here anymore.." Riza said.

The detectives looked at eachother, while they were thinking of a potential place to hide in Cairo...

Ed was grateful when the long journey to England came to an end. He was among the first to get off the large ship, and the only person to vomit. He stayed drunk most of the time to try and sleep but the sea sickness only are it worse. From the port in Liverpool, the rode on a train to London.

At the train station they were met by two rather large men.

"Oy!" One of them said. He stepped forward, extending his hands to shake Edward's. "You must be Edward Carlyle," he said with a very deep Scottish accent.

"Yes, sir," Edward replied. "This is my team of agents. Jasper Mayfield, Thomas O'malley, and Stanley Mellish.

"Right," the man replied. "I'm inspector John MacTavish, and this is my partner Inspector Richard Head. Scotland Yard."

"What can you tell us about the murder?" Edward asked, as they climbed in to a convoy. Edward, John, and Jasper rode in one car and Thomas, Richard, and Stanley followed in a car behind.

"His Majesty the King, isn't happy about the ambassador. He's blaming America for Ambassador Higgins' death, so you're on his sh*t list right now. However, we've got a lead and a suspect in custody, and we'd like for your to be present for the interrogation. But first we're going to stop by the medical examiner's office. We've got something to show you."

**Inside medical examiner's office**

It was cramped inside the room. Six detectives and a doctor stood around the body played out on a gourmet.

"Cause of death," the doctor said in an almost creepy voice, "was trauma to the head, from being pushed off a large building. His penis has also been cut off, with surgical precision. A clean cut, no tears."

"Do we have a name?" Edward asked.

"He's from Shanghai. Name's Shin Yiu Tzu." Richard said. Stanley scribbled that down in his note pad.

"About that suspect..." Edward said.

Thirty minutes later, Edward found himself sitting across from a young clean cut man, who smirked at Edward with an evil look in his eyes.

"This man here," John said, "is Our suspect. He refuses to give us his name, but he was identified by a witness who saw him at the crime seen."

"I ain't done nuttin!" He yelled at Edward.

"What's your name?" Edward asked

The man said nothing. Edward leaned in close the man. "I'm going to ask you one more time and if you don't answer me, you're really going to hate me. Now, what is your name?"

Still no response.

"Jasper, get in here, right now!" Edward yelled. Jasper walked in and shut the door silently

Edward nodded at Jasper, who walked behind the man, grabbing is hand. In one quick motion, he snapped the man's finger, causing him to let out a scream that could curl anyone's hair.

"Answer the question, boy!" John screamed.

"I swore an oath! Go to hell! I'm not saying g anything until I get a lawyer! You bastards! "I'll-" he was cut short when John hit him with a baton, knocking him unconscious. "Right," he said. "We'll get him medical attention, and a lawyer and try it again later. Richard?"

He nodded and Richard grabbed the man and carried him back to his cell.

"I've got one more thing to show you," John said.

Edward followed him to evidence lock up. John opens up the gate leading to large room, full of shelves and boxes, each labeled with a name and date. Each box had a clipboard and paper for everyone who handled it, to sign.

He led Edward to a box on the farthest side of the room. "We found this on the body." He reached into the box and pulled out a rose button with an S.

"We believe it's part of an organization called Sphinx, who carries out political assassinations. "

Edward furrowed his eyebrows. "Sphinx?" He asked. A local gang? Or something much more?

Later that night Edward found himself pacing in his hotel room. He was alone, finally, where he could sit down and just think. But he couldn't sit. Thinking about this case was keeping him awake.

He reached inside the pocket of his coat, grabbing his silver flask, and chugged the rest of the gin, hoping it would knock him out for the night, to no avail. He opened his door and looked around, making sure it was clear. He headed downstairs to the bar, hoping a drink their would calm his nerves.

Sphinx, he thought. He heard that name before, but where? Edward ordered scotch on the rocks and the bartender slammed the glass on the table, startling Edward, who was lost in thought.

Am I over analyzing this? He asked himself. He shook his head and finished his drink. "Looking for some company?" A female voice asked.

He turned and faced her, seeing the face of his ex wife. He blinked a couple of times and shook his head. The whiskey? No..it wasn't her. If was someone else. She sat down next to him and started a conversation.

Before he knew it, they were both drunk, and stumbled back into his hotel room.

As the detectives thought and thought, it seemed as if nobody could come up with a great safehouse the detectives could hide at for the next couple of days; at least, until the deal was taking place.

Then, it suddenly struck Vulkie. How could she forget? "Guys" Vulkie carefully began, as everyone in the main dining room eyed her, "I know a place. I am not sure how safe it is, but it is only known to me. Now, I'm absolutely sure we can stay there until at least saturday." Vulkie added.

"Sounds good to me." Marc said. "Good job Vulkie." Riza said, nodding her head. "Well, if we must depart this comfortable place, I suppose we should make due now." Molly added.

"Luckily, I still got the car keys for the Rolls Royce Molly." Vulkie said, while tossing the keys over to Riza. "You drive. I really, really could use some shuteye if you don't mind. Here's the address" Vulkie added, while marking the spot on the map that Marc had quickly scooped up from the living room table. As the detectives loaded their luggage into the Rolls Royce, they got into the car and went on their way to their new safehouse.

*** The New Safehouse ***

After a somewhat uneasy 20 minutes of driving, Riza parked the car. "Are you sure this is the place Vulkie?" Riza asked, poking Vulkie carefully. As she opened her eyes and rubbed them to get rid of the sleepiness, she looked around and smiled. "Yes, this is the place. Definitely from what I remember" Vulkie replied.

The detectives got out of their car and admired their new safehouse. Sure, it wasn't as swanky and luxurious as their old safehouse, but there was enough room for them to be safe at the least. It used to be Vulkie's parents's old vacation home.

"Mind opening the door?" Marc mumbled, while Molly placed her third suitcase into his arms. "Oh, watch it Marc... that one carries all my expensive items.." Molly said, while patting Marc on the back to move him forward towards the safehouse...
