New York, 1938
St. Regis Hotel
Rooftop Nightclub

"So there I was, staring down a barrel INCHES from death...and I told the man, 'darling REALLY, if you simply must shoot me do allow me to remove my earrings. They are Cartier, you know." Molly Maltese paused to take a sip of her Red Snapper, popping the olive neatly between her cherub lips before gnashing it to a pulp. "And the man was quite flummoxed, he said- I say, is that Riza Hawkeye?"

She rose, the group of rapt men in tuxedos and women in glittering dresses and furs murmuring their protests as she wended through their knees. But the apparition she was quite sure had been Riza Hawkeye had vanished in the crowd of New York socialites populating the exclusive terrace.

"Well, this place is a bit ritzy for Riza." she murmured, fairly certain her old acquaintance didn't make a habit of populating social-climbing fetes. And she reasoned, any time Riza had appeared before it was hardly ever for a pleasant cause. Well, maybe that was unfair. It just seemed she was more the swirl-of-furs-and-stiletto-daggers type than a frothy socializer like Molly herself.

Peering around, Molly saw nothing but the shadowed faces of revelers partially cloaked in the smoky haze. She had just been about to give up and go back to her companions when the most shocking hubbub began. Over on the north part of the terrace, she could distinctly hear the shouts of men and panicked screeching of females. Moving forward, she could just make out..

"Did you see... The Ambassador... who could have... murder! Someone has pushed the Ambassador off the building!" Molly picked up speed, expertly weaving through the crowd of panicked voices. Sirens already began to sound twenty stories below. Just as she grasped the ledge and looked over, an all too familiar voice sounded in her left ear.

"Oh hello there, old friend. Lovely breeze out today."

Before her stood Riza Hawkeye herself, looking utterly unruffled as several ladies fainted behind her.

"Mellish, Mayfield, find out what time that ship in the harbor leaves in the morning. I want tickets on that ship for us, and I want them five minutes ago. O'malley, I need whiteness reports to follow up on. Send agents to them tomorrow, We will get in contact with all information when we arrive in London."

"Edward," O'malley said, "we do have eye witness reports and a picture of two women who were there at the crime scene." Thomas held up a picture and Edward took it to study the picture of the two strikingly beautiful women.

"We've identified them as Molly Maltese and a Riza Hawkeye. Two other people have been reported to be working with them, according a couple field agents. One Victoria Nousson and Marc Lacrimosa. All are known private investigators. It's a rave again st time now. Sir, if we don't find the killer before them, we'll be in deep sh*t."

"Did you say Marc Lacrimosa?l

"Yes. Our field agents say he was seen leaving on a plane to an unknown location with the three women."

Edward smiled. "You shady Italian bastard," he said to himself. "I got you now."

He turned to his men. "Pack your bags fellas," he said. "We're going to London."

The next morning, Jasper Mayfield, Thomas O'malley, and Stanley Mellish, arrived meeting Edward at the ship. By 9:00 am, the ship left port and they were on their way.

The first sentence in my first post got cut off, but it was Edward asking if there was a name.

“Where’s Molly?” Riza asked. Marc shrugged, and Vulkie remained stonily silent.

“Oh calm down, Vulkie,” Marc said coolly. The other woman had been glaring daggers at Marc and Riza from behind her bourbon glass.

“Don’t you tell me to calm down,” Vulkie said, slamming down her glass. “What you’ve done is unforgivable. You’re a sadistic bastard--no normal person could put another human being through torture like…like what you did to Hassan.” She choked back a sob.

“It was necessary. We got valuable information out of him.”

“Oh yeah, really valuable,” Vulkie replied sarcastically. “A man named Jack. And what Jack’s last name? Where is he?”

Marc could feel his ears heating up.

“You’re sick. You and Riza are both sick. I thought we could work together, but it seems we’re too different. It was a mistake to trust you,” Vulkie ranted.

“Trust? Don’t make me laugh. If you weren’t so trusting of your beloved Hassan, then maybe you wouldn’t have been so completely blind to the fact that he was a member of Sphinx!” Marc spat.

“And what if he was? He was still a person. A person with a family to support. How could you--”

Marc cut her off. “You know what your problem is? You’re too softhearted. Who cares if he had a family? Scum is scum, any way you look at it. Don’t waste any more of my time with this garbage. Your words mean nothing to me, woman,” he said dismissively.

Riza raised an eyebrow.

Vulkie opened her mouth once more as if to retort, but this time no sound came out. After a moment, she threw her glass against the wall and stalked out of the room.

Riza had never seen Marc like this before. Her mind was swimming with questions. Why hadn’t Vulkie verbally attacked her as well? She had only been mentioned in passing. Why did she fixate on Marc? Was there some past between them she was unaware of?

“Well then,” Riza said. “I guess we’ll be keeping that extra little tidbit to ourselves.” She folded her arms.

Just then, gunfire broke out.

"Let's see now." Molly said to herself, clipping down the street at a brisk pace. She'd donned sunglasses and a fashionable headscarf, but as the men stopped on both side of the streets and looked at her, she thought maybe a wiggle skirt hadn't been her best and brightest.

"Here!" She exclaimed, finally arriving to an attractive building with wood accents. A demure sign said "The Pyramid Room." She knew it to be a popular society spot for luncheons and had a standing invitation.

"Amelia de Maltesse." she said in dulcet tones to the host at the stand. "Of course Miss Maltesse. Just you?" The host asked, leading her promptly into the darkened interior of the restaurant.

"Just me today." She chirped. "Any diners?"

"A full house, Miss de Maltesse." He led her to a wooden table in the center of the dimly lit restaurant and pulled out the blue velvet upholstered chair for her. She requested a glass of her favorite wine and he sped off. Molly settled in to wait.

She didn't have to wait for long.

"Amelia!" A voice boomed, and a portly man dropped in to the chair opposite her.

"Willie I've told you a million times you can call me Molly." She said, extending her hand to be kissed. Willy Dennington was an American expatriate in Cairo, a wealthy businessmen heavily involved in politics and the highest of social circles. Molly thanked her lucky stars that he was here, Willie was also known for his complete inability to keep his mouth closed about the happenings in town.

"What brings you in to Cairo, Molly?' Willie asked, signalling to a waiter to refill his glass. Molly twirled a strand of auburn hair and twinkled at him for good measure. "Willie, I just needed some sun, but I do swear I heard the most curious story the other day. Something about an ambassador being tragically murdered and mutilated! I'm quite shocked!"

Willie tried his best to look appropriately abashed, but his eyes twinkled with glee. He knew something, alright.

"Yes, the ambassador. He was actually here from Shanghai- stationed in Egypt for foreign interest. He was well known to many of us- his name was Qui Lin. In fact, we--" he moved his hand expansively to canvas the room- "were all present when he was assassinated. It was a social event, a charity for the Historical Preservation Society held at the Atenakhen a few blocks over. It's an event hall and club."

Willie seemed to somber, recalling the details. "We heard the screaming from outside- I believe some poor woman discovered him floating facedown in the fountain. He'd been savagely stabbed and well...mutilated. The police had no suspects, and the investigation was closed."

Molly leaned forward, her attention rapt. "And what about you- did you suspect anything?"

Willie cast his eyes around. "There was rumors that a local gang was involved, they call themselves the Sphinx something or another. I think it's in bad taste to be in a gang, personally, but they held a lot of sway around here. Qui Lin made a comment to me in passing when he was in a particularly dark mood a few days prior to the event. He mentioned that he would not be a victim and would not be held up by any paltry pickpockets. When I asked him to elaborate, he refused and walked off. I believe he was being threatened for money, by this gang."

"How do you know it was the Sphinx gang?" Molly asked, wondering how the two were connected. Willie pulled at his tie. "They've been making the rounds of this group particularly, and everyones afraid to talk about it. The Robinsons were ransomed for their priceless Shihtzu Percy, nabbed out of the backyard by a note sealed with a wax seal that bore a bouquet of daisies. I've heard other stories too.... in fact, I got this note. If you're investigating this... I'll let you have it."

Willie passed a sealed envelope across the table, and she could see the remnants of a wax seal also bearing a bouquet of daisies on it. It read:

"Mr. Dennington, we know the...

details of your arrangement with Mr. Akbhar. If you do not wish your wife and community to know, you will place a cash sum of $10,000 in a brown bag and place it in the forked tree at the utmost corner of the Gaza Garden Park by 10pm on Saturday night. If you fail, you will be outed and the consquences, severe."

Molly looked over the note, biting back the questions about the 'arrangement'. She had a feeling, and preferred not to know.

"Willie, I think you should go through with the drop. However, I'll arrange for some surveillance, and hopefully we can recover your cash at a later time without any unsightly information coming to the surface." Willie just nodded, and Molly began to gather her things, throwing some bills on the table.

"I have to show this to my compatriots right away. This could help our case greatly. It was lovely to see you!" She kissed her friend on the forehead and sped away, intent on finding her friends at the safehouse.

As she neared the address, the strangest feeling prickled across the back of her neck. Was she being followed? Peering around, she saw nothing. Hurrying, she threw open the door just as she heard a glass shatter and a door slam.

“Well then,” Riza said. “I guess we’ll be keeping that extra little tidbit to ourselves.”

Suddenly Molly felt something whiz past her ear and gunfire broke out behind her. With an unladylike shriek she threw herself out of the doorway, rolling like a madwoman as she tried to think where her gun was.

As Vulkie stalked out of the main hall towards the living room to cool herself down, she went over the events again that happened a few moments ago. She and Marc had gotten into a verbal fight about trusting eachother and the limits as to how information could, or even should, be obtained. Marc did have a point - Vulkie was a softhearted girl, who looked at every aspect there was. She knew she had made a valid point with bringing up Hassan's family, but was shocked when Marc said he didn't care; didn't care about a 5 year old boy, who would never see his father again...

"Well then" she heard Riza say, "I guess we'll be keeping that extra little tidbit to ourselves." she added.

Just then, she heard a shriek and the sound of a gun discharging. Instantly, she fell down, onto the floor, grabbed her Colt 1911 and crawled quickly towards the main hall. As she saw Molly rolling over the floor, she got up and went into a shooting position, covering Molly while she rolled her way into the living room.

As Vulkie glanced towards the dining room, she saw that Marc and Riza were in the main dining room, trying to peek through the windows as to see where the shooter was.

"I do say.." Molly said, adjusting her hair quickly and frantically searching for her gun, "I think someone wants us dead.." she added.

"You think?" Vulkie said, sarcasm drowning her voice, as the shooting continued. Just as she was to peek around the corner again towards the door opening, a bullet lodged itself into the wooden frame and Vulkie quickly drew herself back.

"Son of a bitch - he's got us covered from all angles." Vulkie murmered, while Molly smiled.

"What could you be possibly smiling for? We're in a life or death - situation at the moment." Vulkie said, looking disturbed towards Molly, who had finally retrieved her gun.

"He's got us covered from the front dear... which means that you need to get the UPPER hand on him" Molly said...

As Vulkie thought about that sentence, it instantly struck her. She slapped her hand on her forehead; why didn't she think of that?

"MARC, RIZA" Vulkie shouted, as the gunfire was still going on, "I NEED TO GET UPSTAIRS. COVER ME!"

As Marc and Riza heard that, they used their guns to shoot out the windows and return fire to the gunman, who had seized his fire for a moment. He was probably reloading at this point.

"Now or never.." Vulkie said towards Molly and she sped towards the main hall and took the spiral staircase upstairs. As she was on the first floor, she sped her way towards the window at the end of the hall and looked out of it. She couldn't see anyone, possibly meaning that the gunman was in cover or she wasn't in a high enough position. As she had a split second, she made her way towards the spiral staircase again, ascending it to the second floor.

As she sped her way towards the window there, she heard the gunfire resuming and a shout erupted from within the house. Someone had been hit...

"Goddamnit!" Vulkie said to herself, and she took cover by the window. As she peeked over, she could see the whole street. "There you are, you son of a bitch.." Vulkie murmered, while taking aim and fired her Colt 1911. The bullet lodged itself into the car the gunman had hid himself behind and he was immediately alerted by it, taking aim and shooting at Vulkie.

Vulkie immediately ducked and waited, until the gunfire stopped. She stood up, took aim again and... the gunman had disappeared. "Where did he go?" Vulkie said to herself. She waited another minute or two, but eventually made her way back downstairs towards the main hall. Gun still drawn, she rushed towards the front door and closed it.

"Molly, Riza, Marc - you guys alright?" Vulkie asked, while looking at the group of detectives who had realized the gunfight was over and had regrouped in the main dining room.

As she observed the detectives, she saw that Molly was hit by a bullet in the shoulder..

Marc was addressing the wound already with a medical kit he had found in the kitchen. "It's nothing Molly - the bullet went straight through. You'll be fine" Marc said, reassuring Molly.

"It's nothing? You call being shot nothing? And what about my fancy outfit?" Molly said, as Riza smirked and Vulkie let out a sigh.

"Did you get him at the least?" Molly asked, looking towards Vulkie. Vulkie shook her head in return.

"Once he was alerted to my position, he knew the game was up. He made sure to get away clean and with his life still intact. Although I'm sure that whoever sent him, won't be too happy about it when he hears that he didn't kill his intended targets." Vulkie said.

Riza immediately sprang up and said: "Come with me Vulkie - we need to investigate his shooting position. Maybe he left a clue behind for us."

As the two detectives made their way to the front door, they both drew their gun again. It was unsure whether he was still in the vicinity and hoped for an easy target. As Vulkie poked her head around the corner, she didn't see anyone in the abandoned street. "All clear" she murmered and the detectives went towards the car the shooter had hid behind.

As they looked on the ground, they could see at least two dozen of bullet casings, .22 caliber bullets by the looks of it. And there, lying under the car, was an envelope.

"Jackpot" Riza said, while Vulkie grabbed the envelope from under the car. Riza still had her eyes on both sides of the street, just in case.

"Here it is." Vulkie said. As she turned the envelope over, she noticed that it had a wax seal with some type of flower on it. Identifying flowers wasn't her strongest point, but she was sure that someone might know what kind of flower it was.

As the detectives returned to the safehouse, Vulkie threw the envelope in front of Molly. "Only thing we could find, except bullet casings." Riza said. As Marc and Molly observed the letter, Molly made out a small sound, as she saw the envelope...

"That seal..." Molly began, as she looked into her envelope and produced a somewhat similar envelope.

"Where did you get that Molly?" Marc asked and Molly began to explain her meeting with Willie Dennington, the propiertor of the Pyramid Room located in the middle of Cairo.

"So you see, we have another lead. I've convinced Willie to go ahead with the drop on the next saturday, at 10 pm." Molly concluded.

As the detectives glared at the still sealed envelope, Marc picked it up and tore it open. As he opened the letter, he just simply placed it on the table so that the detectives could all look at it.

It said: "STAY OUT OF OUR BUSINESS, IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIVES DETECTIVES! YOURS TRUlY, JACK"

"So the letter was made just in case the shooter didn't succeed into getting rid of us. That's why it was left behind" Riza said, while Vulkie scribbled it down. This case was getting more frustrating by the minute.

"I bet your buddy Hassan told this Jack that we were staying here. That's how they probably found us" Marc snapped at Vulkie, while Vulkie opened her mound to retort. But she was interrupted by Riza: "Not now guys... we need to focus. Our first objective is to find another hideout, since we aren't safe here anymore.." Riza said.

The detectives looked at eachother, while they were thinking of a potential place to hide in Cairo...
