Pugilism vs Flirting

If I'm not wrong, pugilism increases the chance of intimidation (or interrogation?) by 20% against both male and female suspects (right?).

Whereas flirting increases the likelihood of rule bending (or sweet-talking, I'm not sure though I have the skill! :P ) for suspects only of the opposite gender.

That gives a slight edge to Tough, unless there's a similar skill for charm that I don't know (?).

If there isn't, wouldn't it be possible for us to get such a skill too? :)

I wanted to get the Banker in Cairo as my contact, and I'd decided that I would solve the first few favours (randomly), and then start quitting when getting a contact there was likely.... but the Shoemaker latched himself on to me on my 2nd favour itself.

I wish they wouldn't simply stick themselves on to us, and that I could I least say no, thank you very much, I prefer the Banker. :P But I'm stuck with him now unless I retire and start afresh.

Have you considered retiring yourself, Bela? After all what's a few million points of experience compared to decent contacts.

Yeah Kachenka, the whole quitting-waiting-stopping-yourself-from-bashing-contact's/contact's friends'-heads-to-get-the-favour-only-to-get-another-stupid-Boa is probably not that much fun :D

I would have loved having the "no thanks" option, but in the beginning, I still wouldn't have used it all that well. I remember getting Shoemaker contacts EVERYWHERE till I came up with the brilliant idea of making sure I got them everywhere so I wouldn't have to bother with Advanced Footprint Analysis, at least for a while. Ah, skill point troubles; good times :D And then the Barber in London decided that he'd run out of Rasputin Eggs and should probably just offer me his eternal gratitude. Idjit. So yeah, I have, Yeti, but I'm very lazy and I'm not sure I'd stick at it and get better contacts that way either. If I got the Barber in London again...*shudder*

I'm curious; for detective who choose Tough and Charming, do their influencing statistics change?
For example, a very charming person has statistics like:
Base Interrogation Chance: 68
Tough Equipment Adjustment: 0
Adjusted Interrogation Chance: 68

Base Sweet Talking Chance: 58
Charming Equipment Adjustment: 26
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Flirting Bonus: 20
Adjusted Sweet Talking Chance: 139

It would be easier to influence Ghassan by being nice.

So, if I were Tough and Charming, would the Base Interrogation Chance and Base Sweet Talking Chances change?
Is it like, since I'm very charming, my base charm is 58 (but tough 68? Weird.) So if I were both tough and charming, would both the bases be half, or double, or just the same?
Kinda confused.

The base number is random (that's what I think, and what I've seen), and I don't think it's affected by archetype. Was this one of your first cases with JoC or something? So it'll go everywhere from around 15 to 69 while you're playing random mysteries (it might go higher than that on cases RRH and below, but I have no idea, I don't really use JoC then).

So someone correct me if I'm wrong...

The short answer is: Your archetype only effects your ability to buy skills. ie if you're VERY Charming then your charm skills are cheaper than in you were say charm / smart.

Your archetype won't effect the base roll the computer makes when you encounter a suspect or townie. ie when the computer puts the metaphorical dice in its metaphorical cup it doesn't care what your archetype / skills or gear are. it just rolls (jiggle jiggle jiggle)...

Tough 23
Charm 45

Then you're *decisions* do the rest. ie what gear, what skills. etc

Eventually, in time, you'll get ALL the skills. So then it just becomes a case of gear, and whether you want to bash your way through on pure smarts eg

Base Interrogation Chance: 34
Tough Equipment Adjustment: -6
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Pugilism Bonus: 10
Adjusted Interrogation Chance: 73

Base Sweet Talking Chance: 59
Charming Equipment Adjustment: 31
Advanced Skill Bonus: 35
Flirting Bonus: 20
Adjusted Sweet Talking Chance: 145

or take a more balanced approach and go tough charm to give yourself a chance with a wider range of suspects / townies or charm smarts | tough smarts in order to lessen the blow of getting HAIR HAIR HAIR HAIR instead if Straight HAIR, Curly HAIR etc etc

I'm personally a proponent of bashing my way through cases, - zero tough and smarts and relying purely on my dazzling wit and lightning sharp repartee.

Oh. Okay. So that's why sometimes the base tough is greater than charm tough, because it's random. :)

Bela, no not really, it wasn't my first case with JoC but since I only have charm skills right now (other than Trap Detection etc), I hardly ever use it.... that's why I don't know much about the base numbers. :)
