Here are the results from the poll we ran concerning player opinions on the new Detective's Notes feature. Just a reminder, this poll was open to all current subscribers for the past week.

How do you like Detective's Notes?
- 84% - I like it
- 11% - I don't like it
- 5%- I dont have an opinion

If we do keep the feature, should it be something that requires unlocking?
- 77% - No. Make it available from the beginning
- 19% - Yes. Players should have to earn it
- 4% - I dont feel like answering that silly question

If we did keep the feature, should it always be visible on the map page?
- 58% - Yes. Keep it as accessbile as possible
- 35% - No. Make it hidable
- 7% - Some things are best left unsaid

With caveats for the fact that people with more than one active subscription were able to vote more than once, the results of the first couple questions are pretty convincing.

It seems like a good idea to keep the feature available to all players and think about tweaking it rather than changing it in major ways.

While a pretty clear majority want to keep it accessible all the time, I'd still like to try to figure out an easy way for people who don't want it on to collapse the notes.

We got some good additional feedback in the open text field as well. In particular, a few people asked for Witness Evidence to be included and also a space to add notes for each suspect.

Please feel free to discuss further here.

Monochrome is nice, after all this is Noir, but in this particular case I'm all for Black and White in Color :).

As for making the notes visible or not, depending on the player's choice, it would be nice to have some kind of button to turn them on/off. Personally, I like it the way it is.

I'm really happy the features have been voted through - thank you everyone for your confidence in my work. As a consequence I'll now be able to work on expanding the Notes to include witness evidence - a process which I'll work on with the community, much like the original Notes. So plenty of screenshots and opportunity to give feedback.

As Tyrion and Vulkie say, I believe in this case the benefits of having the colour on a single line outweighs the usual black/white/yellow style; it's so useful to be able to tell at a glance what you're dealing with. The select use of colour is not unprecedented in Noir either: red text is displayed when an achievement is gained, the entire game is covered in yellow, and the icons on the map light up in full colour when the cursor crosses over them - and with the recent changes the icon will stay in colour on the toolbar when a location is visited.

I can live without the colour since the notes rearrange the suspects in the real/fake/researched order as you check their alibis (and having the alibi (r/f) really helps). The colours make it much easier, though, and I think most players would like to keep the colour.

As for making the notes hide-able, I still don't get why it had to be "accessible *or* hidable", since I had to choose one, I chose accessibility (although all the "I have no comment"-type options were rather winning :D) - I'm in support of making it hide-able as long as its still accessible when I turn hiding off.

Oh, and is there any reason we can't have the townie toolbar on the "case" page too? Now that I'm used to it, I really like it!

The toolbar can basically plug in anywhere. By the case page you mean the in-mystery casefile as opposed to where you start a new case?

The in-mystery one (I didn't know it's possible to make it so that it's only there when you have a case open; if you can, then the in-mystery one).

Ok since I'm playing cases, I kind of feel like I know what I'm talking about at the moment... :D

Firstly, one thing that could have been added to the poll is 'to the side' OR 'at the bottom'. Yes, Yes, shut the gate after the horse has bolted. I guess I just realised how many people have tall screens vs how many people have wide screens? That's rhetorical by the way. I'm always scrolling down or zooming out to play.

Secondly, even though I'm somewhat colourblind, I like the colours.

The t f are fine but as I've played I've found they make the text line longer, and when you're somewhere where the townies names are long eg the Spice Merchant, the single line turns into two lines and everything smooshes up in the container often over the 'rule-out' check-box.

PS Likewise when the right-handed note is 'circled' it becomes two lines. That could be abbreviated to fix that. Right H note etc

Sorry this wasn't meant to become a bug report, I've done enough of that already in PM's :)

I'd also like it better if the case notes were 'persistent' through the side screen. EG if I have a Left-handed Note, and a Curly-Hair and two female Threads, I really don't want to have to pop back to the map screen to see if I want to ask the Right-handed Straight-haired Man his alibi. That was something I could get from my hand-written notes straight away, and oftens saves a question you can use later down the line for WE.

(And no I don't want to click on each suspect and gather all my evidence first. My suspect might die next visit)

Finally, WE. Originally I wanted it. Now I'm not fussed. However to the new player, it might seem odd that everything is covered 'except' that. It could be covered when looking for WE by 'circling' or 'recolouring' a suspect in the list so that you could see X has WE against them.

Apart from that, I like the case notes. It doesn't feel lazy. And it's a close aproximation of how I play, give or take some things I can get over.

Squirrel Out!

I wouldn't worry too much about the exact position of the Detective Notes at the moment. After the next big content update Ben and I will work on making the site mobile friendly, and part of that will include design of the site as it currently stands. Everything will be laid out better to take advantage of every screen, rather than all the content clumped up on the left.

That overlap with long alibi names doesn't happen on everyone's browsers - the issue seems to be that some people have text set to a larger size than the site wants them to have, but it keeps the boxes the same. It's an issue that needs to be tackled, and a rookie error on my part, but if you look at the site on another internet browser it may appear correctly.

Thank you for all the feedback. There's definitely things to take on board there.
