Our Friend YetiFace has been hard at work again improving Sleuth.

He's moved the icon toolbar around on the map page. More importantly, townie locations relevant to solving cases are now linked to each other with their own toolbar. So you shouldn't have to jump back to the map screen as often.

Yeti's working on a few other similar improvements that should help take a lot of the tedium out of Sleuth, and reduce the opportunities to make silly mistakes while you navigate.

Tell us what you think!

Thanks Vulkie, I didn't notice the different colours :-D But, what if one is colour blind? ;-)

If one is color blind, then they shouldn't play Sleuth Noir (yeah, I just made that pun :p) - No, but seriously, I have no idea. Maybe Yeti could think of a (real) (fake) (researched) - extension instead of colors. Bear in mind, this is just his first sketch :)

The colour blind issue concerned me when I was putting together this draft, so I went to a site that would convert an image into one that approximates how a colour blind person would see it. The worse affected people seemed to be those who were red blind as far as I can tell. This image:

Wound up looking like this:

http://www.color-blindness.com/coblis/uploaded_images/post_ruleout_protanopia.jpg

So whilst the colours are not as distinct, one can still tell them apart enough to be able to work out who's who - especially with them grouped by colour. If anyone does have a kind of colour blindness here though, and can tell me how you're actually experiencing the images rather than my trying to replicate it, that'd be fantastic.

Whilst it'd technically be possible to list "(real)/(false)" after the alibi as well, it'd mean I'd have to make the information boxes even wider, to accommodate for example "Alibi: Fortune Teller (Real)", which currently would shoot outside of the box. There's already quite a lot of black space to the right of the boxes as most of the information isn't as long as a Fortune Teller alibi, and I'm worried about it looking unattractive if I add even more to that.

So what I'd rather do if it turns out that having the real/false information is really important to players is do away with the townie's career unless it's an unconfirmed alibi, and just have the alibis listed like this:

Alibi: Real
Alibi: Fake
Alibi: Unknown
Alibi: Fortune Teller
Alibi: Research

However I have found, as a non-colour blind person, that in private testing the colours have been easy to use once you're clear on what they mean. Green is real, orange is unknown/unconfirmed, red is fake, and blue is researched.

Now, onto Secret_Squirrel. Witness evidence isn't taken into account at all. I thought it over, and I figured by the time you're looking for witness evidence you've narrowed your suspects down to a (hopefully) small group of potential murderers, and if you manage to get the goods on one of those people then that's it, you've caught your murderer. If you need to refresh your mind on who your murderer is you can check the case file, but by and large you find the evidence, then immediately nab them. There's no need for more information to be taken down in the notes.

Oh, and when you ask a suspect about another suspect, that suspect is now ruled off their list - so you don't forget if you've already asked about someone.

As for pushing ruled out suspects to the bottom of the notes, yeah that could be done.

I think a tutorial would be quite a lot of work to set up. I can probably write out a help file for it, but I think when you all get to try playing a case using this system and see it evolve with every step you take you'll quickly understand what everything means and how it works. At the moment you're just getting snap shots rather than the fluid experience of using it yourselves.

Another solution to the alibi issue is that we could include an icon to the right of the career that makes it clear whether the alibi is real or false. For example a little tick or cross. Or else simply writing "(r)" or "(f)" so it uses up less space.

Sounds like a great plan Yeti - looking forward for an updated screenshot with that feature implemented :)

Here's before and after pictures for adding the (r)(f) extensions:

They're a little unattractive, but easy enough to have in there if people want them.

So many links. It obviously means that there's just that much work going into it, but there are so many links. The upside is this: I am getting used to the toolbar up there :D

Okay, all of it looks great. The "r/f" thing sounds good; it seems a lot like what you would write when you're taking quick notes. Maybe you should have it in caps, so that it's still clear. With the "real/fake" on the suspect's pages, it wouldn't be too hard to guess it in case you didn't know or something.

When does the 'crossing-out' difference in the pre-rule-out and the post-rule-out thing show? When you reload the page?

Oh, and a new tutorial might not be all that essential; a new player might be able to make sense of it right away since, unlike the oldies *wonders if she must brace for impact*, they won't be used to it being any other way. Plus, it'd be an easy case, and stuff that we picked up and learned to look for after a few hundred (thousand?) cases might be apparent to them when listed out on the helper. I don't know if I'm not seeing something, but they'll probably take to it right away.
