1. 12. The fact that for many years it has 12 members was coincidence. At the start there were even 15 members. I think the reason why it did not became 14 or 15 had to do with the issue around Saarland. 13 is unlucky. 12 was a good number for various reasons.
2. Moa! Haast Eagle (ate Moas).
3. Looong time ago. Wild guess Greyling
4. Monty Python and the Holy grail
5. April 30th. Though some of us already start after work on the 29th. :)
6. Mr. Red.
7. Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
8. Same as 4.
9. Tiguccigalpa?
10. Google says pensylvania :)

In light of answer number 1. The next referendum should be about if one star should be removed. 13 may be a more appropriate unlucky number, and go back from union to community. :)

In spite of the googling (not allowed!) Jstkdn is the winner! Congratulations!

The right answers:
1. 12
I always thought it was because of the 12 members, until i did the research for this quiz :)
But the flag was first used by the Council of Europe, which had 15 members at the time. There was a proposal for 15 stars.
Germany objected to the number 15 because one of the members of the Council was Saarland, and 15 stars would imply "star" sovereignty for that region.
France would not agree to 14 stars as that number would acknowledge the absorption of Saarland into Germany. :D
13 was ruled out for superstitious reasons.
12 was reckoned to be a "good" number because it had no political innuendo, and there are
-12 signs of the zodiac;
-12 hours on a clock;
-12 months in a year;
-12 apostles;
-12 tables of Roman Law;
-and 12 starry crowns of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Funny people those Europeans..

2. Moa or Haast eagle are both right
3. DaRu
4. Monty Python and the Holy grail
5. April 30th. Though some of us do already start after work on the 29th.
6. Mr Red (i agree blue, that Mr Blonde is confusing!)
7. Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
8. Monty Python and the Holy grail
(It has so many nice quotes, i had to use at least two!)
9. Tegucigalpa
10. Pennsylvania

Thanks for playing!
