See if there is interest for this.

1. Each day I will post 10 questions, at random times of the day.
2. Each Quiz runs exactly 24 hours.
3. The first person that has all 10 questions right, wins. Or if no one has all questions right, the best one wins.
4. You can only post answers ONCE for the same quiz.
5. No cash involved. Just glory. :)

10) the original "gumshoes" of the late 1800's were shoes or boots made of gum rubber, the soft-soled precursors of our modern sneakers... At the turn of the century "to gumshoe" meant to sneak around quietly as if wearing gumshoes, either in order to rob or, conversely, to catch thieves. "Gumshoe man" was originally slang for a thief, but by about 1908 "gumshoe" usually meant a police detective, as it has ever since.

OK ... Sila is the grand winner. She got every question right except Q8 - the word generally used these days is 'Professional Investigator' instead of private. As an industry, we're trying to move away from the sleazy, dirty raincoat image portrayed in the movies, books and games like this one! Sila gets the extra point for the etymology of Gumshoe anyway, so 10 points to Sila : o )

As Jstkdn is away again today, I'm printing another set of questions. The topic is literary figures, and you have to work out from the clues who they are and what book they're from. The clues are quite long so I've just done five. First one to get them all gets our eternal respect and admiration. (books are from classics to modern)

1) I am 12 years old, blond, charismatic and good looking. It has been said from my build that I may turn out to be a boxer, but I have good leadership qualities and a desire to maintain order. My father is a Naval officer and, as such, I have an essence of Britishness that permeates my interactions with others. Although I lose several friends throughout my ordeal, ultimately I survive and I take responsibility for the tragedies that have occurred around me.

2) I am a medical man of considerable experience, serving in British army in Afghanistan until an injury forced me to return to England. I am brave and assiduous, though it has been said that, despite my obvious intelligence, I lack brilliance and have been somewhat overshadowed by those around me. My wife’s name is Mary.

3) I was born in Santa Rosa, California. I am tall, good looking and tough enough to take care of myself when necessary. I am very witty and my manners are bad – I used to work for the DA but I was fired for insurbordination. I carry a gun, live alone, drink a lot and smoke. One of my hobbies is chess. I like to study old championship games and work out the problems.

4) I am a ‘civil servant’ of sorts living alone in London. I have a problem with an ulcer on my leg and a paralyzing phobia of rats. I am downtrodden, disillusioned and angry at the government. My girlfriend, with whom I have a secret affair in the top of an antique shop, is called Julia and together we harbour a fantasy to overthrow the system and everything that goes with it. However, my efforts do not come to light and I see out my days a broken, gin swigging man.

5) When I was a young girl, I lived an idyllic life on an island with my father, who is a doctor. At 17, I fell in love with and became engaged to a handsome young fisherman. However, this existence was shattered by war in the 1940s. My fiance was changed by the war and, after he assaulted me, he committed suicide. In time, I fell in love with an Italian officer which deeply troubled my conscience at first, as I was very patriotic. However, further tr
