Time for the answers :)

1) He is indeed a lighthouse keeper, and the boats crashed without the light.
2) She was a a parachutist whose parachute malfunctioned.
3) The car was a convertible.
4) His ashes are in an urn on the mantel.
5) They went to a drive in movie theater.
6) He stood on a block of ice and the ice melted.
7) They were goldfish- the wind blew the window open knocking over the fishbowl.
8) He's born in room number 1972 of a hospital and dies in room number 1952.
9) It may be a stretch, but yes that is exactly what the poor guy did after he had been fishing and then called to tell his wife how big the fish was, accidentally punching his arms through the booth.
10) The man is a travel agent. He had sold someone two tickets for an ocean voyage, one round-trip and one one-way. The last name of the man who bought the tickets is the same as the last name of the woman who "fell" overboard and drowned on the same voyage, which is the subject of the article he's reading. This may have derived from a story done by Alfred Hitchcock, if the following Hitchcock quotation is accurate: "If you take your wife on a sea voyage, buy her a round-trip ticket no matter what your plans may be." According to How Come?, it's loosely based on the real-life case of a killer named Henry Landru.
- although the crime story reading incident could work too :)

Well done everyone, these arch villains won't be on the loose for long with such fine detectives around - bookem and AZN Cinderella tie for first with 9 correct each, congratulations to you both :)
