As a follow up, I now have enough money for one half of a down payment for the Penthouse Office in New York. It's small enough for a starting agency but it has all the equipment (particularly the Crime Lab) and facilities an successful agency might need.

Thus, I am renewing my above invitation for a young detective with complementary/contrasting traits (very smart/very tough or tough and smart) to open a partnership in New York.

Hi Wilfred

I hope you're enjoying the game :)

Have you thought about saving your money for some equipment, travel, an apartment or books and maybe joining anohter agency for a bit?
That way you'll see how they work, save some money and maybe meet people to create an agency with later.

To be honest, when you have an agency with all P.E contacts (which is what most agencies do) the crime lab is redundant.

And I've found that after spaces for detectives, the most important thing is case file space.

Also... It doesn't really matter what ''type'' the detective is. You can be a very tough detective, use only charming interview skills and wear charming clothes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may help:

*Archetype: This only makes the skills associated with it cheaper.

It means you could be a Very Tough detective with only charm skills and charm gear and be very successful.

*Gear/Equipment: Gear enhances the skills you have.

It means you will have more success using a skill if you have clothing that enhance that skill. For example, if you use sweet talking and have 20 charm, it will work better than having only 3 charm.

*Skills: These are your tools to being a detective.

Charming and Tough are interview skills either suspects or townsfolk.

Smart skills are to find evidence at the crime skill and surviellance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is most important, (especially when doing A.I cases) is to have people with different P.E (and sometimes W.E) contacts.

Also, if you want to take a lot around an agency before you buy, let me know and I'll send you an invite for a few days.

However, do what makes you happy :)
And have fun

Lady Caplan, thank you very much for both your information on agencies and your information on game mechanics. Even though I am well familiar with the latter, I appreciate your time and intention. Your suggestions on P.E. contacts are something I have not thought of but I will surely take in consideration.

However, I need to clarify my intentions. I am trying to start a small agency for newly subscribed players that have recently started the game. In my experience, however helpful large or famous agencies might be, one such new player might not feel that he is his colleagues' equal or that he could have a big impact or contribution to the agency. I believe the Crime Lab is a very useful tool in this situation where new players have not yet amassed the needed contacts.

I am of the same opinion in regards to case files space; hence my thoughts on renting the Penthouse Office, which has second to most case files space and, at the same time, it is small enough to be manageable and for every agent to feel that their own part in the agency is important. Money wise, I am looking at forming an agency as a way of making money better/faster than spending my funds on something else at this point. The partnership is a way to fund this ambition without depleting my sources completely. Furthermore, I thought the agency could serve as a leverage for members to join bigger agencies or, indeed, form their own, when they feel ready; this is one of the reasons why I don't intend for a larger roster. Having said that, I would discuss the property choice with the partner; it's not a final decision.

Finally, citing the archetypes was a way to communicate the traits that I am looking for. As I am mostly using Charming skills, someone who is using Though skills would be the excellent candidate. Just as an example, at this stage, a new player that has a Very Though archetype is highly unlikely to have a large number of Smart skills, which is why we could make use of the Crime Lab.

''Money wise, I am looking at forming an agency as a way of making money better/faster than spending my funds on something else at this point. ''

I'm not sure how this will make you money? You have to pay rent daily and while it's true you can do TH, unless they're single-city hunts, you can lose money due to travel. Especially if pirated.

''As I am mostly using Charming skills, someone who is using Though skills would be the excellent candidate. ''

If the new player did the tutorial, read the basic stuff on the board, then most will get some smart skills. And while the lab may be useful in some cases, I've found the majority of the time, by the time the case is put in the files to narrow it down, it's pretty much a lost cause unless anyhow. I've never found the lab to be useful.

However, some players may not have any smart skills and maybe others found the lab useful? I just don't see this...

I'm still unsure why you want someone that is tough? It has no bearing on your cases or your agency?

If it's for gear, as long as people are doing favours, it's pretty easy to attain. And if people want stuff to buy from factions, they're be going for their faction anyhow.

Also, as a new player, I'd much rather go into an established agency as most don't expect rent from new players (my money is then all my own), can help with equipment either as a gift or a loan, can unclam cases through surviellance, have all the P.E contacts (so it doesn't matter if I am lacking in smarts for a bit) and will also have a crime lab.

I am in no way trying to put you off :) It really doesn't matter to me either way and I wish you luck and best wishes no matter what you choose.

I just want to make sure you have all the relevant information, tis all :)

Once again, if you ever want a short stay at an agency to have a look around, let me know me, Lady Ruby Caplan, Danny Mack or Lady Emerald Devon know.

And if you do decide to start an agency and are stuck for P.E contacts, I'll be more than happy to lend a detective with the P.E contact you need to clear case files.

Happy sleuthing :)

Hi Wilfred. ;-)

It's nice to meet you. ;-)

Like Lady Ruby said, archetype (Tough, Charming, Smart, or a combination of any two of these) has little to do with actual casework. It deals with your ability to acquire skills for less skill points than normal. If you have one archetype, it means you can acquire skills from that particular group for 4 less skill points than those who don't have that archetype (i.e.-- Basic Interrogation will cost a Tough archetype 3 skill points. It costs me 7.). People with a mixed archetype (Tough and Smart, for example), have a 2 point discount on their particular skills (i.e.--Basic Interrogation will cost a Tough and Smart person 5 points, versus 7 again for me.). Archetypes have *ZERO* to do with contacts or the ability to solve a case (I know of one person who is a Tough archetype, and their skills and equipment are ALL charming or smart. They have absolutely no tough to their name, besides that archetype. It just means that they will need to spend more skill points to get skills. Not a big deal for them. ;-)

I am glad that you've managed to save up at least $10, 000 for an agency deposit. Sounds like you've been working hard the past few days. However, you're only 4 days old, according to your profile. You say that you've had some experience with game mechanics, from your statements, I'm wondering just how much experience you've actually had. It takes a while to figure out all the intricacies of Sleuth. I have to wonder just how much real-time experience you've had.

Agencies help a great deal for solving casework, dealing with problems, and acquiring gear and money. However, they take a *HUGE* amount of money to run (even the smaller ones). Most Founding Directors of successful agencies didn't start their groups until they had at least 1 million experience and at least $100,000 in their bank account (most have a great deal more). You've been here 4 days and have 5,000 exp. Like Lady Emily, I think it might be more advantageous for you to wait a bit before starting your own group. But again, you do what you want. I hope you have good luck with your agency.

I've read a few of your other posts. You sound familiar to me. Have we met before??

Again, good luck with your group. Hope you do well here at Sleuth. ;-)

Thank you very much for all your help, especially the immense support of Emily Hill and the conspiring Lady Caplan. Even though I can't think of something that a small, inexperienced agency can do for a large, famous agency ran by the best detectives you can find but we will return the favours one way or another!

I am happy to announce that I found a partner that shares my enthusiasm and lack of funds and, in all our stubbornness, we are only hours away from diving into a reckless and adventurous endeavour. We will announce our existence here fleetly after that!
