Would you guys be interested in something along the same line? And perhaps a bit more Sleuthy :).

The object of the game is to find a film Noir character, who doesn't necessarily need to be a leading character, but not a third footman either, if he doesn't happen to be the murderer :). We need to guess the character's name and the movie he or she appears in. Googling is permitted, and I am the first to admit that I don't remember the names of characters in movies I saw years ago. In any case, it won't help if we don't know what we are looking for. The films should be "real" Noir movies, filmed not earlier than 1940 and not later than 1960.

I'll start:

I am a woman :).

Everyone else has apparently taken a leave too :).

1948? A shot in the dark, but I'll try: Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall) in "Key Largo". I love the movie.

My dear Lady D! You are awesome, and I love the movie, too. Nora Temple is correct. I thought it might take a bit longer, but well done!

Thank you, Peter, I was surprised myself.

Here's a new task for film noir fans:

He is the secondary lead in this movie, but a very interesting character.

Sorry for my lapse on this thread. I've been very busy, and trying to keep up my responsibilities on a couple of other MB threads.

So, in search of some other filter, directed by an American?
Is the primary male lead played by an American?
Is it a Peter Lorre film?

Is the secondary lead killed?
Is the secondary lead a murderer?

Apology accepted :).

The director was born out of the United States, but he got American citizenship in 1943, prior to directing this movie, so technically he was an American.

The primary male lead is American. The female lead is also American (this one is a bonus).

No, it is not a Peter Lorre film.

Yes, the secondary lead is killed at the end. The secondary lead is a murderer.

To recapitulate:

True:

1. Male
2. Secondary lead in this movie
3. Early to middle 1940s
4. (Police) detective film
5. US actor
6. US setting for film
7. North
8. East
9. The director born out of US but became American citizen
10. Primary male lead is American
11. Female lead is American
12. He is killed at the end
13. He is a murderer

False:

1. Not a Peter Lorre film

Lady D, I think I may have it. The pieces fit ...

Waldo Lydecker (played by Clifton Webb) in "Laura", 1944.

It's Waldo Lydecker of course, one of the most sophisticated villains of all time.

Congrats Peter!
