This is a variation on a theme of Francesca's "Who am I?" thread. The rules are the same, only in this case it would probably be best if we asked one question at a time :).

I'll start:

Its history goes back more than one thousand years.

So, it's gone from cities to gardens to castles; it's fun, though.

A fairytale castle? Though I don't really know that those have names...gotta be European then :) I think...?

The castle is not European nor fairy-tale.

Is it a classic castle? With turrets and a gate, and maybe a moat to spare? :) Is it a real castle? If so, is it in one of the Americas or Asia or Australia...?

Does it have a royal family residing within it, or has it been converted into a tourist hub of some sort?

The castle is a real castle however not in the disney-way you're thinking of.

(Travelling Europe, I've realised that most castles just look like big houses or mansions.)

It does have turrents but no moat nor gate they way you are thinking.

It's never house royalty and yes, it is a tourist hub.

*No moat or gate
*Not royal
*Has turrents
*Is a tourist hub
*Not in Americas, Asia or Australia.

Is it in Europe? You said it wasn't European, but maybe you were talking about its style, or something... :)

No. It, or the castle is not in Europe.

The castle has various styles, mostly Gothic or Venetian I think.

Damn! So, unless it's an ice castle in Antarctica, I can't think of any place but Africa. Is the castle on an island?

Greenland? New Zealand? And aren't islands formally included in continents?

*Not in Greenland
*Is in New Zealand.

And aren't islands formally included in continents?

From Wiki: New Zealand is not part of the continent of Australia, but of the separate, submerged continent of Zealandia. Zealandia and Australia are both part of the wider regions known as Australasia and Oceania.
