Who am I?

Well, since we're very good with this whodunnit thing, I decided to launch this little game here.
It's pretty simple. I am someone (person, cartoon, book character, whatever) and everyone else can have a guess at who I am.
The one who guesses it has the next round, and we'll try to guess on him/her.
I hope this works. :-)
To start, I'll give you all one hint: I'm a real person.

But was he famous because he was in the military or is that just a side effect? Also, was he was famous for something else (else being unrelated to the military) he did or something that happened to him?

You mention the rank of General. Was this person in the army, or was he a member of another branch of the services? What rank specifically was this man (Captain, Sergeant, Major, etc.). Was this person ever in a war? If so, which one??
How's that for a barrage of questions, Peter??

Did he fight in the American War of Independence? Did he fight in the Civil War?

Good job folks.
He is famous for something(s) related to the military, but his commissioning came after his fame. Think American War of Independence.
