Discovering evidence always?

What should I know about my chances of discovering evidence when I click on the Crime Scene?

It's a random chance, right? Only way to improve chance is with smarts equipment and a "Very Smart" Archetype?

You'll always discover footprints and handwriting. You'll discover hairs if you have the basic Hair Analysis skill and threads with the basic Thread Analysis skill.

The random chance affects not whether you discover the evidence, but whether you can find out more about it (i.e. right/left, heavy/slim, straight/curly, male/female). This only kicks in for each piece of evidence if you have the appropriate skill (Handwriting Analysis, Footprint Analysis, Advanced Hair Analysis, Advanced Thread Analysis). It has a random element, but it's affected by the 'Smarts' score that you can see on your detective page under 'Adjustments'. If you have a very high Smarts adjustment then you'll nearly always get all the information possible about the evidence, but now and again you can still be unlucky.

As far as I know, the 'Very Smart' archetype doesn't affect your chance of analysing evidence. What it does is to make it easier for you to learn Smart skills, such as the evidence analysis skills: you need fewer skill points to learn each skill.

Hope that makes sense!
