I am happy to announce that the latest expansion to Sleuth: Noir, the Nemesis Hunt, is officially live as of 23:00 server time on September 9th, 2012. That is a full hour AHEAD of the scheduled update time, so first off let me start by thanking Ben for everything he has done to enable this expansion from day 1. He has been very open and supportive in this endeavor, and none of this could have been done without him. So thank you, Ben.

Now, on to the good stuff... how do nemesis hunts work?

If you have captured 3 or more Arch-Villains (10 starting October 1st), you are able to start a Nemesis Hunt. The first step is to head to Shangri-La and talk to the Prince.

...and that is the only step I will give you.

Good luck everyone! There is a special achievement on the line for the first person to capture a Nemesis, so get to it...

Dear Summer, the thing is, Nemesis is the product of a completely voluntary effort. It's not a purchase. It's something a player did to make the other players happy. That's good enough a reason to be happy, in my opinion. ( Thank you, Serges.) Many of us, including you, agree with this anyway.

Nemesis isn't some service that Ben charges anyone for. I think VS is only reminding us of this fact. He's strictly talking about Nemesis and says leaving because of Nemesis sounds a bit absurd (and many people returned Noir before Nemesis actually).

I think he's right because:

- people knew that this was a voluntary work.

- people have been reminded of the fact that Serges was the sole creator of Nemesis and Ben was as much a stranger to it as us when it was first launched.

- it's a work still in progress

- we cannot treat this work as if we were paying for this.

- we chose to play it and we never thought "it's unfair that we are not paying for this, we should pay, it's a great expansion". No, we just jumped right in.

- if the work is voluntary, then playing it is a choice. There absolutely is no bargain for anyone to hold their end of.

So let's first pay for it if we are to treat Nemesis as part of some Noir service. Doesn't sound very nice when put this way, does it? This question is what it all comes down to, however, when people coldly think of this as part of some professional work they paid for.

It actually destroys the whole beauty in a voluntary work. Months of work, according to what Ben says. Despite its bugs, it's possibly the greatest addition made to the game and it's going to be even better when it's finished.

Most of all, nothing but goodwill was and is behind it. What more could anyone ask for?

You know, I cannot imagine Linux users making a deal of its problems. Only, Linux users contribute to Linux whereas we can do no such thing for Nemesis because we know nothing about codes.

Oh dear â€" I night have known that the vampires would descend.....

Sorry Eden, but your response doesn’t make any sense. It appears to be replying to a post that is critical of nemesis hunts whereas my post is explanatory in nature. I’ve highlighted some of the reasons that people come and go from Noir (which happens all the time), pointed out the difficulties on both sides and that’s about it. Perhaps I made those points too well?

In the whole of this thread I can’t actually see any unpleasantness, apart from some allusions in your own post and some ‘naughtiness’ in VS’s :). Nemesis hunts are voluntary in nature (both creation and participation), but in order to take part people do need to be subscribed. In other words, for those who joined/renewed specifically in order to try the nemesis hunts, it was ‘a purchase’. However, bugs etc are expected to crop up in any programme. Why then should people not be free to post about these just as for any other bug or query? It is, in fact, the most helpful action they can take in order to flag up such things . It is not for you or me or anyone - apart from moderators and Admin. - to dictate what should be posted on the Community Boards. As long as things are within the Code of Conduct.

Me and my other half have paid for quite a number of subscriptions for players on Noir. We’ll be happy to do so even when we move on. But for those players who are a bit bored with the rest of the game and who had previously wanted to stay primarily for the nemesis hunts â€" well we won’t renew for them if they don’t want to stay.

I'll never be able to prevent someone seeing conflict where there is none. Personally I think most of us are singing from the same hymn book. But there you go.

As for this Linux thing: well if only its users can actually contribute to Linux then, of course, they’re not going to raise any big issue. It would be their own fault after all, lol.

Happy sleuthing!

Summer:

No one was being critical of you. I used your comment only to make a distinction between voluntary vs professional.

I think you got the whole Linux example wrong (consumers contributing zilch vs contributors who are also consumers was my argument).

I also think V said "apples" and in response to V you said "oranges". I hadn't realized this until your last post. (apples being Nemesis as a reason to leave vs oranges being reasons to leave Noir)

"...dictated...", "unpleasant...", "allusions". Where exactly did you see all that? For the allusion bit, lol, I have a recorded history of bluntness, if it comforts you. I don't make allusions. I will give an example of that to you in my PM because this is not the right place for that.

I only tried to stay on topic because I was not interested in who did what. I just wanted to dwell on what voluntary means because I think words that were unkind have been uttered for something so valuable.

I was also sorry that people left "because of it" so I also wanted to make a distinction between "our expectations" and "what could be expected under certain circumstances". Sorry if that displeases you but I am not here to please anyone. You are not here to do that either.

As can be seen from your last post, plus one of my previous posts that had absolutely nothing to do with you but with this approach again, "critical" and "explanatory" aren't really mutually exclusive. In fact its being explanatory is what makes critical different from judgmental, no? No harm in that I suppose, as long as we can discuss things.

I never thought there was any conflict until your last post.

Anyway. The phrase "unfortunate addition" was what triggered me to write all this stuff in the thread.

That is all I can say about this. Thanks for reading.

My ray of sunshine: This is a game. A very fun game! I play when I am not working or doing things with my family. There are bugs from time to time. My CDs skip from time to time, too. C'est la vie. I pay very little to play here, and even though bugs and dodgy urchins can slow it down sometimes, the price is right and I love it! I am having a ball! So regardless of the occasional snags, thank you to Ben, Squirrel and Serges for creating this wonderful pastime that I enjoy to the fullest!

That’s good, Hellen :) But I think that when Beefy and others got frustrated about delays and so on (further up this thread) they also had a right to do so. I guess when you’re fairly new to Noir and things like treasure hunting, opening up Cairo etc., are still fresh and new and exciting, then you won’t really empathise with those who have played those parts of the game to death. Good luck to you :)

But he asked a legitimate question â€" I don’t know why people want to censor that. It wasn’t unappreciative of any efforts to enhance the game. I agree that the subscription costs are low . For you and me anyway. I don’t think anyone actually said they weren’t. I’m also aware that around the world at large â€" and for certain age groups â€" it’s less so. Hope you continue to enjoy Noir.

Happy Sunday!

Constructive criticism is always good :) Summer, I think your posts were well thought out and make valid points.

I too hope the bugs get worked out soon. It is frustrating to have new content that doesn't work properly, when a lot of people have waited a very long time for something new to make the game more interesting.

That being said, I think the expansion is excellent :)

I can sympathise with Beef and others as well. I can't do the faction one because my points go down not up. And then it gets really frustrating when you have things affected that are not even apart of the Nemesis hunt. Missions I had before the expansion came out.

Still though, the Nemesis is a great addition, and thank you Serges for this expansion.

My dear Summer some of your words or phrases are not so constructive

For example you don’t need to be ironic. Phrases like the following…
1. Oh dear ďż˝" I night have known that the vampires would descend.....
2. Sorry Eden, but your response doesn’t make any sense
3. As for this Linux thing: well if only its users can actually contribute to Linux then, of course, they’re not going to raise any big issue. It would be their own fault after all, lol.
…really ...have no reason to appear

You also have no reason to judge or criticize so phrases like those you used “ I can’t actually see any unpleasantness, apart from some allusions in your own post and some ‘naughtiness’ in VS’s” …are actually not helping in a constructive discussion

Finally posts that try to arise suspicions in the audience like the one you posted “@Eden. Your PM has been forwarded to the moderators” are ...

Anyway Serges is inactive so maybe this whole post is actually totally useless
