johann norden opened the box. there was a dead rat inside.
johann knew the meaning. he knew that The Group was on the street and that he, johann, had best give up the case or meet the same fate as baron grunfeld.
johann took the box and threw it out the window. it landed by the man in the bowler hat. the box slammed to the cobblestone and the dead rat was catapulted from it's death compartment onto the stone beside the boot of the man who johann knew had been watching his third story room thru the late evening.
the dead rat, the boot and the man in the bowler hat were not strangers.
