I have enjoyed this site, and I enjoy reading the messages and solving a few cases. I like reading, but not posting. Heh, heh, heh.

But now I am posting. My question: "Why should I join?"

I now get free cases--5 per day with a favor. What good is paying to join?

Subbing not only gets you 12-16 cases per day (depending on favors), but it also allows you to participate in group activites through agency membership. Some agancies are more active and/or more regimented than others. Odds are that there is one or more whose culture will match your level of involvement.

It all depends on what you want out of the site and the time you have to spend.

Thank you, Peter. It sounds like there are two benefits:
1) more cases
2) group activities

I am not sure of the group activities. I looked through the agency listings, and saw that most agency members are inactive, unsubscribed, whatever. At least compared to the number of active and subscribed. Sounds like I can subscribe for one month, join an agency, and let my subscription lapse without any consequences. Other than less cases again.

More cases: I like that. Solving is fun for me. I could probably do 20 a day if they were available.

I have to admit that I have looked at this site since the beginning of the year, and nothing seems to ever change. Throughout 2011, I haven't seen anything really new on the site. It is really odd to read some of the old posts from years gone past. There were some great ideas, and nothing ever changed.

I guess I have another question. Are the admins responsive?

I ask because there is a reference to a carnival, but there is nothing there. Also, it seemed there was a way players could exchange equipment, and that also got dumped according to the posts. I also posted a pm to each of the three administrators, and not one answered me.

If I invest my money and time here, I want to be subscribed to a vibrant site that will be here two years from now. Can anyone convince me this place is thriving?

Anyone?

No, the admin's are not responsive.

While it is true that the admins are largely absent, I still find the site active, if not to the level we would all like. And the modest investment in $$ is worth the acivities and interaction I get back. I have been here almost 2 years. I expect I will be 2 years from now. But who knows?

The agency is really useful to me :)
If you are stuck on a case, you can share it with your agency members. They can help you to analyze evidence or use their contacts to help you with your case. For example, if you need the calligrapher to identify 2 of your handwriting evidence and he is clammed up, another member with the calligrapher contact can help you. There is also an agency locker where you can share equipment. I got my equipment there.

Peter,

Thank you for your response. Your 2-year perspective is valuable. Vodkapop doesn't get that I am talking about the big picture, not looking for help with cases.

Regarding the big picture, I think SS did a Freudian slip with his comment. He tried to be funny, and actually spoke the truth. I am the cautious type. I believe that actions speak louder than words.

To that end about actions, I have been very intrigued with the Night Queen issue. Something about her not getting credited for a Sidekick. It took Night Queen's and support from others' loud complaining to get any response. SS finally responded--slowly.

Yet Night Queen has the same Sidekick credits today that she had when she started complaining (2). I call that a lack of action. SS may have mollified Night Queen that Ben would look into it, but not me.

That is one outcome I would like to see. An action taken with Night Queen. It is the only short term solution I can see in my decision to join.

So the stage is set. Action!

"SS may have mollified Night Queen ... but not me."

heh, heh, heh... I think maybe you know more about the benefits of subscription than you let on, considering that Slick Tricky is a known "test character" for Night Queen.

Your sidekick complaint may be legitimate (I don't know the details, other than what is in the Sidekick Coupons - worthless?? rant), but a post on the newbie board which underhandedly amounts to, "I'm holding my subscription hostage, and btw here are a bunch of reasons not to subscribe" is probably not going to lead to that vibrant community you say you want. Also, arguing through doubles doesn't strengthen your case, it makes you seem nephish. Please, for the love of all that is holy (or unholy, depending on your preference), don't be nephish.

For the real newbies who browse this thread... I've been around for nearly four years. Yes I've been inactive, I've been unsubscribed. I keep coming back. There's enough in the sleuth world to keep me busy, even during the times when the group aspect of agency work is slow. Like the admins, real life - not the game itself - is what keeps me from sleuthing as much I'd like. I'll gladly send a 15% off coupon to anyone who wants to give it a chance - or better yet, ask for one from Night Queen. I don't really need the extra cases.

You may have noticed that I had stayed off this message thread. Until now.

Know this. I do not speak for my husband, and my husband does not speak for me. He is not subscribed, though I have urged him to. He hears all my rants and raves of this site. We also share computers. His original post here is legitimate. His hesitations are legitimate.

You have the audacity to call me nephish, which isn't even a word. But it doesn't sound like a compliment.

So Jesse, please don't pretend to know anything. You are obviously smart, but don't accuse anyone before Really knowing the facts. You know how popular false accusations are around here.

One more thing. My complaint about Sidekicks is legitimate. Summer Daze has authenticated the legitimacy of it. And that complaint is in the appropriate location.

Do you want to falsely accuse Summer Daze too?

Well Slick, all I can suggest is to give subbing a try. Again, the $$ are minimal. Check an agency, of two, or more.

I would recommend not joining a spouse's agency. Been there, done that. Can easily complicate RL, which is complicated enough, if your's is anything like mine. I come here to get away from it for awhile.
