William lit his pipe as he looked into the murky water in which Shanghai pier stood. Three pints at the Ritz bar were bad for the nerves, and he thought about his parents as he watched the waves bob up and down.

Then he saw the woman.

She was hanging from one of the wooden supports of the pier by her red dress. William tore off his trench coat as he began to climb down. He wondered if he'd join his parents, wherever they now rested.

The woman was some twenty-five years old, and had probably been knocked out by the impact of the pier. Her life was literally hanging by a thread, and she would have fallen in a minute or two.

***The Pier***

Lighting a cigarette, Vulkie walked alongside the pier. Sir William told her exactly where he encountered the lady. The smell of fresh fish just caught was filling the air and local shops were open. "Pretty lady buy silk scarf?" a man asked, but Vulkie shoved him gently away and continued her way.

As she reached the end of the stairs leading down towards a small dock and some boats, her eye caught on something glinstering. It was a small ring, engraved with a capital S. She bagged it and put it in her pocket. She also noticed some blood drops, possibly from the German lady.

For the rest, the pier seemed awfully clean, as if someone picked everything up that could've proven vital for the investigation, except the ring. It almost seemed like some sort of "invitation", to see and catch the thief who stole her handbag with the jewel.

Vulkie made a mental note to ask Sir William why the lady was carrying a 10 million dollar emerald with her. No one that stupid would do that with an emerald, it would be safe in a safe or at a bank...

Returning to Sir William's apartment, Vulkie noticed the door was already open for her. The only thing was... no one was inside it. Where could Sir William have gone with this mysterious German lady and who was she?
