William lit his pipe as he looked into the murky water in which Shanghai pier stood. Three pints at the Ritz bar were bad for the nerves, and he thought about his parents as he watched the waves bob up and down.

Then he saw the woman.

She was hanging from one of the wooden supports of the pier by her red dress. William tore off his trench coat as he began to climb down. He wondered if he'd join his parents, wherever they now rested.

The woman was some twenty-five years old, and had probably been knocked out by the impact of the pier. Her life was literally hanging by a thread, and she would have fallen in a minute or two.

William somehow managed to haul her up onto the edge of the pier, and ran to the quayside for a cab.

"My wife has had a couple of pints too many." he told the driver, and gave him a business card.

At his apartment, William decided to phone an old acquaintance long-distance.

"Hello?"
"Is that Vulkie?"
"Sir William!"
"Please, cut the Sir. I feel like a teacher." mumbled William in his British accent. Vulkie giggled.
"Seriously, I take it this isn't a social call."
"I'm rarely social. However, there is a young woman in a red dress unconscious on my floor and I am hoping you could come here to Shanghai and help me." William explained. "Please." he added
"Always too polite," she smiled, "I'll try and help somehow."

Wondering what all the fuzz was about of a "damsel in distress", who was lying unconscious in Sir William's apartment, Vulkie let out a grin and packed some clothes and went off to the airport for the next plane towards Shanghai.

*Shanghai*

As Vulkie arrived at Shanghai Airport, she was immediately greeted by a rikshaw driver. "Hello lady, you be Vulkie?" he said. Vulkie slightly nodded in his direction. The driver immediately noticed a bit of her nervous look. "Don't worry pretty lady, Sir William sends regards. I take you now to him, yes?" the driver said and they went off to Sir William's apartment.

***Sir William's apartment***

It was late in the night that Vulkie arrived in Shanghai and it became even darker when she was standing in front of Sir William's apartment. She entered the building, walked up two stairs and knocked at the door with a 6 hung up to it.

She heard some bolting inside being changed and then the door opened. And there he stood, all sweated and being nervous. "I'm glad you could come. Do come in, I have prepared some tea." William said, being a perfect English gentleman.

William was so nice to place the lady on the sofa instead of the floor, so when Vulkie walked inside the small apartment, she almost couldn't miss her lying there on the sofa.

"I see you've quite caught up with the lady, since she is in such a deep sleep.." Vulkie said and made a grin. William walked in with two teacups filled with steaming hot tea and also smiled.

"Well, I didn't exactly asked to be in this situation, but to be honest, I don't mind it myself rather..." William replied.

Some groans and a hand moved at the sofa and the woman moved her head around and looked in astonishment.

"Here's your chance William. Explain the situation to the nice lady and ask who she is..." Vulkie said, as she took a seat across the sofa...

"Sprecht ihr Deutsch?" whimpered the frightened woman
"Ja, ich spreche Deutsch." replied William calmly.

Vulkie frowned. How and why did William learn German? The private detective's license was only valid in New York, London, Delhi and Shanghai. Anyway, with the political problems brewing in Europe, he could get into trouble if he had German contacts. She made a mental note to ask him.

"She wants us to find her handbag."
"I see. Why?"
"It contains an emerald worth $10,000,000."
"Oh."

William was grinning like a Cheshire cat. He was short of money himself and a little extra cash would do his finances a world of good. Then he frowned.

"Never tell anyone that I know German. I could get into a deep mess if they knew." he said, taking a sip of tea, "Milk in your tea?"
"No thank you."
"All right. Anyway, I'd appreciate it if you could go down to the pier and investigate there. I'll try and find out more from her."

***The Pier***

Lighting a cigarette, Vulkie walked alongside the pier. Sir William told her exactly where he encountered the lady. The smell of fresh fish just caught was filling the air and local shops were open. "Pretty lady buy silk scarf?" a man asked, but Vulkie shoved him gently away and continued her way.

As she reached the end of the stairs leading down towards a small dock and some boats, her eye caught on something glinstering. It was a small ring, engraved with a capital S. She bagged it and put it in her pocket. She also noticed some blood drops, possibly from the German lady.

For the rest, the pier seemed awfully clean, as if someone picked everything up that could've proven vital for the investigation, except the ring. It almost seemed like some sort of "invitation", to see and catch the thief who stole her handbag with the jewel.

Vulkie made a mental note to ask Sir William why the lady was carrying a 10 million dollar emerald with her. No one that stupid would do that with an emerald, it would be safe in a safe or at a bank...

Returning to Sir William's apartment, Vulkie noticed the door was already open for her. The only thing was... no one was inside it. Where could Sir William have gone with this mysterious German lady and who was she?
