The heavy rain made the visibility much harder to see the man that Marc was chasing through the city streets. The sidewalks were slick with water pouring into the street. The chase started after a failed attempt on killing Marc, who had no clue why this man wanted to kill him. But then again, he could think of several reasons. They ran twisting and turning through alleys and then back into the streets on different parts of town. “STOP!” Marc yelled at the man. The man kept running.
The man kept his distance from the detective. Marc was only able to catch a glimpse of the mans feet as they turned around corners. Marc was out of breath as they stopped in front of an old abandoned apartment complex. “You have no where left to run, buddy,” Marc said to the dark figure. “Come on and get me, Marc. You’re right where I want you!” The man turned and ran into the building and slammed the door shut.
Marc swore to himself as he ran up the stairs leading to the closed door. Marc reached down and turned the handle. The door was unlocked. The man he was chasing was toying with him. The building was dark. There was no light except for what little the street lights outside gave out in the rain, which wasn’t nearly enough to depend on. Directly in front of Marc was a long hallway with six doors. Three on each side. Marc moved to the first door and kicked it open.
“ You can run,” Marc said, “but you can’t hide. I will find you.” He walked out of the first room and moved to the second door. Just like the first, that room was empty. He kicked in the third door. And walked in quietly with his revolver drawn out. “Where are you?” Marc whispered to himself. He turned to leave. As he turned around he found himself face to face with a masked stranger. “Here,” he said. The blow on Marc’s head knocked him unconscious.

"That reminds me, I need to pick up some clothes at the tailor's place," Vulkie thought, as she passed by Sami's restaurant. Strolling down the pavement, she heard a distinctive sound coming from Sami's. "Oh god, not another mental insane person who thinks he can outshoot someone.... I'll check it out," Vulkie said and carefully strolled back, her hand reaching in her pocket for her trusted old revolver from her dad.

Suddenly, five men showed up with tommy guns and started blazing gunfire, shattering the window of Sami's restaurant while they proceeded to clean the room of every living creature.

Vulkie immediately ducked behind a car and watched. She heard a distinctive voice shouting, "Ed! Do it now!"

"RIZA!" Vulkie thought, as she recognized the voice. A few seconds later, four men and a person in a dark suit were running down the street.

"Stop, I'm a detective!" Vulkie shouted, as they were running down the street. One of them turned around and began to shoot at the car which Vulkie was hiding behind.

"Why do I keep getting into these messes, I swear... If I do this one more time, it'll probably mean the end of my career..." Vulkie thought and peeked around the side. The men were running around a corner.

When Vulkie reached the corner, she heard screeching car tires and saw a car speeding away. Vulkie shot two bullets at the car, but to no avail.

"Damn!" Vulkie thought and she walked back towards Sami's. As she entered the room, people were crying, huddling together, and comforting each other. But one view disturbed her. A man, holding a girl in her early twenties, who had died by a hit from a stray bullet. "Whoever did this, must be insane..." Vulkie thought.

Then she saw Riza standing up, getting the dust off her dress. Standing next to her was a man who looked familiar. They turned and noticed Vulkie standing there....

*******************June 1, 1925*******************

It was late in the day when Sully and I decided to call it quits and pick up the next day where we left off. So far the only thing we had was that the gem, if activated, gives anyone the power of immortality being like that of a god. While, I myself had no belief in such nonsense, and believed in only one God.

That night I went into my small one room apartment and put on a fresh pot of coffee. I knew it was going to be a long night. I had too much on my mind. How could such a small gem posses such a large power? If possible, why is it so important? Where could it be hid after it got secured? Erik Von Schmidt's wife had told us about the gem when we had questioned her about her husband's death.

She had explained to us that her husband had gone looking for it but was killed just shortly after he started. So was it possible that within just a couple days, he had gotten too close? I thought it was most certainly possible. But who could posses such a jewel, and why?

The smell of coffee filled my house and I grabbed a cup and just inhaled the steam and aroma of the hot liquid. After drinking two cups and thinking of those questions over and over, I fell asleep.

**********June 2, 1925***********

I awoke early in the morning, made a fresh pot of coffee, and was soon to work. I walked into the office about the same time Sully got there. "So where do we begin?" I asked him.

He looked at me and laughed. "Good question," he said, "I'm not even sure where to begin."

"Well..." I started, "I talked to a guy in London yesterday and he said its a powerful gem, and it makes who ever posses it, immortal like a god. The hard part is finding it, and stopping whoever has it."

"Right," Sully said. "So, Mrs. Von Schmidt has no clue where we could find it, and Erik is dead. We have no leads. What do think we should do?"

Molly knew the minute she heard the first panicked voice yell "explosion at Sami's!".
Call it gut feeling, call it merely knowing someone as well as she did, but two words popped into her head and they weren't "freak accident."
Those two words were Riza Hawkeye.

Calmly running a hand over her immaculate blonde mane down over the luxurious mink stole she had draped over her shoulders, she made a split-second decision. Whipping out a compact with the speed of a professional gunwoman, she examined her lipstick with a sharp eye and satisfied it was all to rights, snapped the silver compact closed and dropped it in her purse. With a nod to Erica Strauss, a beak-nosed old biddy proficient in jewelry appraisals and a large influence in Molly's latest business venture, she exited the modest storefront and hung a sharp left, heading up to Sami's Greek restaurant. Adjusting her silk gloves, she blithely ignored crying and screaming passerby and the frantic whir of police cars speeding passed. She had a little musical number stuck in her head, it was a concerto of some sort. Humming the first few bars serenely, she rounded the corner and surveyed the damage with a clinical interest.

"Well. I guess I haven't lost my touch after all." She said, raising long thin eyebrows and smiling pleasantly at Riza Hawkeye, who just looked mildly confused at this statement. Molly added a wink and then her eyes slid to the man standing just next to Riza and she gave a start of surprise.

"Why, Joseph Zeo! Its been a cool minute since I've seen you around." She said, leaning in to give him a friendly peck on the cheek. The perfect red imprint of her lips were left behind, and she whipped out a handkerchief to smudge it away. "And is that Vulkie? Why, this IS something of a class reunion, isn't it? Whats the story, morning glory? Crazy killers? Mobbies out for blood? Disgruntled ex-wives? Something exciting MUST have happened to bring you all out on the street together once again."

Joseph Zeo was the first person to arrive, and with in seconds of arriving, Edward was introduced to the man, and they shook hands. "What happened here?" He asked.

"Well...its pretty self explanatory," Riza replied. "Couple thugs came in shooting, and well, Ed and I fought 'em off."

Joseph looked over at Ed, who was wiping one last tear from his eye, then he noticed the police taking the body of the young woman away then looked back at Ed. It wasn't hard to guess what had happened. "I remember the first time I saw someone die," Joseph said. And then the subject quickly changed by another person coming to the scene, this time a woman. Beautiful, with striking features, she was introduced as Vulkie. With a curt nod and a handshake, Ed didn't say anything. Edward was quiet like that when something bad happened. Always.

As Joseph Zeo had ultimately knew what had happened, yes, it was the first time Edward had watched someone die. Of course he had seen many dead bodies, which did not bother him. But why did he have to watch her die?

He could feel his eyes start well up with tears again, so he quickly changed his thoughts to something else. As soon as he started to explain to Vulkie and Zeo what had happened, a third person showed up! Who are these people? Ed asked himself.

The police walked past as the new comer gave Joseph a peck on the cheek carrying the body in a bag out to the ambulance.

The gorgeous new blond woman was introduced to him as Molly Maltese. That name had sounded familiar, but he couldn't figure out where he had heard that name. Perhaps he had come across that name in the paper after she had solved some ridiculous crime. He didn't know. The city seemed to be full of private eyes, always solving crimes for people, and always getting into the paper some how.

"What's the story?" Molly asked, "Morning glory? Crazy killers? Mobbies out for blood? Disgruntled ex-wives?"

Ed filled her in, and everyone else, on what happened.

"So, to make a story short, that's it," Ed said, while looking at the group of detectives. It wasn't a pleasant story to hear, but it gave Vulkie enough information to brew further on.

"Ed, you mentioned a list, something about cigars... That is the most interesting fact out of all, together with the photograph you saw Marc on," Vulkie said. "May I take a look at that list?" Vulkie asked Ed. Ed gave Vulkie the list and she scanned it.

"There are one or two names I recognize on this list... A senator called Johnathan L'Avieau and a scumbag called Jerry Horton. These are the people who can try to give us information. Shall I be so kind to go to the senator and ask him if he knows anything about the case?" Vulkie asked to the group of detectives.

"Just be careful Vulkie... I suspect a greater source of evil behind this. This person, who kidnapped Marc, has a decent motive and a grudge against him," Riza said.

"Oh, that sounds just wonderful, that means just half of Sleuthville had a motive to kidnap Marc. Well, that surely makes me feel comfortable..." Molly replied, with a hint of sarcasm in her voice.

Joseph grinned. "I know Marc, he won't go easy though... Nah, it had to be someone he trusted... The only question that's left is: who?" Joseph asked.

"Ed" Vulkie said, "I believe you said you needed to head to the police station earlier. Might I suggest you go there. I know it's been really difficult for you, but we need all the men and women we can get to find Marc..." Vulkie said, looking around the restaurant.

"Then maybe Joseph or Molly can go look after this Horton fella?" Riza offered.

"Fine, I'll go" Molly said, and with that, she left.

"Joseph, maybe you can use your contacts at the FBI to see who has made the last phonecall to Marc's office. I have a hunch there is something interesting to find in his phone records, from just before he was kidnapped," Riza said.

And with that, the detectives went off, to pursue their goals and to find Marc...

Arriving at Senator L'Avieau's place, Vulkie immediately put a smile on her face when she saw how the place was guarded and what kind of a house the Senator had available for him and his family.

As Vulkie approached the guard house, she informed the guards that she wanted to speak with the Senator about a delicate matter. She produced her detective license and the guards nodded, opening the gates for her.

As Vulkie walked towards the doors of the house, she couldn't refuse but to smile. She saw how big the estate was and the Senator even had a large garage with all kinds of automobiles. As she pondered whether to pay a visit to the garage first, to admire the cars, the doors were opened and a butler stood in the doorway.

"How can I help you, Miss...?" the butler asked. "Miss Nouson. Miss Victoria Nouson. I am here on behalf of the local police department and of a kidnapped friend." Vulkie said honestly to the butler. The butler began to sweat. "Yes, I'll see if the Senator is available. Would you be so kindly to wait in the parlor for the Senator, I'll inform him of your arrival" the butler said. Vulkie nodded and followed the butler to the parlor.

"Miss Nouson, a pleasure to meet you!" the Senator said, smiling and shaking her hand. Vulkie detected that something was wrong with the Senator. He was overactively being polite, too polite to Vulkie's standards.

"Mr. L'Avieau, I'm here on behalf of the local police..." Vulkie began, but the Senator cut her off. "Let's cut to the chase, shall we?" the Senator said to Vulkie, while guiding her to a sofa. "Do take a seat, my dear. We may as well make ourself comfortable, shouldn't we?" the Senator added.

Vulkie took a seat. "A good friend of mine, Mr. Lacrimosa, has been kidnapped. We have found a certain type of cigar brand, that is only been sold to a certain type of persons. I've seen that list of persons and your name was on it, Mr. L'Avieau" Vulkie said.

The Senator began to sweat lightly and was getting nervous. He was hiding something. "It is true, I have a certain type of taste for a certain type of cigar, but that doesn't automatically place me there on the scene. For your info, I even supplied some friends of mine, who work at City Hall, with those cigars. Dear friends of mine, as I may add. Influential in this city, they are too..." the Senator said. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have more important business to discuss with a friend of mine. You know, he's the secretary of the mayor, don't you?" the Senator added. Vulkie shook his hand, and before she left the mansion, she asked : "One more thing Mr. L'Avieau. Where were you when my friend got kidnapped?".

"I was at home, writing a speech. I'm having a speech planned this week. Now, if you don't mind?" the Senator replied. Vulkie nodded and left.

"This guy is hiding something and whether he likes it or not, I'm going to find out what that is!" Vulkie thought in her mind, as she walked away from the guards, towards her parked car. Just that moment, a car drove by, a window scrolled down and a tommygun was pointed at Vulkie. The trigger was squeezed gently and the tommygun sprayed it's bullets at Vulkie. Vulkie looked at shock at the car, frozen to the spot.....

"Right," Sully said. "So, Mrs. Von Schmidt has no clue where we could find it, and Erik is dead. We have no leads. What do think we should do?"

Marc leaned back in his chair and took off his hat. Then he reached into his desk and pulled out a cigar. Per Domo. After a deep sigh, he spoke up. "I think we need to go to London and get some more information from Mr. Kumar at the museum. I don't think he told us all he knows. If he knows what it does, he knows how to activate it."

It took longer than Marc thought it would to get approval from the chief. But after convincing him that the murder was linked to a stone, and that stone was linked to something huge and needed to be stopped, the chief finally agreed. Marc and Sully left for London.

The trip on the ship was about two days long. Boring. Marc and Sully both spent the whole trip in the bar drinking and laughing with the waitresses and the bartender. London was beautiful when they walked down the ramp and onto the docks.

The museum was further into the city and it took them a while to get there. "Mr. Kumar, I'm detective Marc Lacrimosa of the NYPD and this is my partner, Sully. I spoke to you on the phone a couple days ago about the Heart of Anubis."

Harry Kumar smiled. "Yes, I remember you," he said, "you're working on a murder case. That brought you all the way out here?"

"Well," Marc hesitated. "I think you know more than you told us. You said, who ever activates the stone becomes one like a God, correct?"

"Yes."

Marc lit a cigarette. "You know how to activate it?"

"What? What are you talking about?"

"Don't play games with me! That stone is missing and someone has it. You know more about it than Sully and I do."

"Yeah, but you honestly think I know how to activate it?"

"Yes, Mr. Kumar, I do. Now you can talk, or I'll take out into the alley and I'll knock it out of you!"
