is there any significance to the "pulled from the root" bit for hair evidence found on the crime scene?

Unfortunately no DNA, in the time where Sleuth plays. Safes another lawyer explaining DNA, to a jury that were too dumb to finish high school and find a job.

You mean, it indicates whether it's curly or straight. Male or female is for threads.
